Bike Lanes in and around DTR

Oh, trust me. I know it’s a concrete Hellscape. I live near the corner of Peace and Boylan and have walked it a lot. When I want to walk east, I will purposefully choose to walk Johnson to Harrington, and then left to Peace to avoid that stretch of Peace from Boylan to Harrington.
Frankly, if I wanted to bike east, I’d do the same. I’m not sure that this stretch of Peace can be successfully managed with its narrow carriageway and the pinch point at the elevated train tracks. Also, the big hill from West to Glenwood is a nightmare for many cyclists.

When I bike east from Village District area, I’ll go down to Jones just to avoid Peace all together.

When I walk to The Village District, I take Johnson to Smallwood to also avoid Peace, and even the minor rolling terrain.
If the city wants to make cycling better for residents, they should consult the contour maps.

They do. It’s why the current “Martin street connector” is on Martin St and not another cross street. I know that’s not a real bike path, but it’s designated as the connector due to grade.

iMaps also has both Raleigh and/or Wake County 2-foot topographical contours available as a layer option.

I always have that data layer turned on when using their app since that’s how I see the world. :smiley:

Idk what you’re getting at but your post is tangential to my long-running gripe about Google Maps bike filters here.

About 2-3 weeks ago there was a huge refresh to Google Maps and many more bike facilities show up now. Not just in Raleigh but in other cities too. It was only a matter of time before AI auto-updated the maps from satellite imagery. I think Google took that step but not entirely sure.

We still have many lanes/paths missing, but it improved considerably with this latest refresh. When I have time I’ll try to find old screenshots and show the difference before & after. Anyone else tracking on this?? Big win recently.

Is it just me or do the bike lanes downtown get taken up with cars parking in them? I seem to notice this along some of the busier streets like Salisbury in front of the Courthouse for example. It is very annoying and frankly it is dangerous. It seems like the bike lanes should be policed for violations. Just my two cents. It encourages sidewalks usage or street usage rather than bike lanes when we actually have bike lanes.

Oh yeah. Salisbury is especially bad. Even the lanes with bollards have cars in them at times. (Or over them) I’m done with the painted bike lanes. They don’t do anything.

It’s not just you, and it’s not just downtown, it’s all over the place. And not just cars. Cars, leaf piles, trash bins, general debris, and wheel swallowing storm drain grates, all blocking bike lanes.

I’ve noticed that sometimes when new development happens and there are buffered bike lanes, the city doesn’t require developers to bring them up to the new standard. At the very minimum they should be replacing the flex posts with concrete islands.

About a month ago I ran into three different things blocking the nice new separated bike lane within 2 blocks of leaving Publix.

Bike lanes are treated like loading zones. Pretty frustrating for people who want to use them as actual transportation infrastructure

And then people complain that no one uses the bike lanes, why do we keep building them.

This happens all the time on Oberlin. Food delivery workers don’t want to take extra time to park in the correct spot, or it’s not obvious where to park. For example (I could be totally wrong about this), for businesses in Berkshire, you can park under the building, but there is nothing to indicate that. Also sometimes see cars parked on the smaller elevated bus stop, which annoys the hell out of me.

I’ve seen this quite a bit too. I tend to bike on Oberlin almost daily. I’d look forward to having the buses with cameras which then would send tickets to these violators.

The City be like “we have a budget shortfall, what ever should we do - raise your property taxes by 2 cents???”

Meanwhile they have a goldmine sitting untouched in endless, endless parking ticket potential. Start collecting bike lane parking violation fees!!!

I noticed another :roll_eyes: incident today that I see often, forgot to mention. State police and other vehicles frequently park on the sidewalks surrounding the State Capitol. I think it’s such a bad look and an easy solution. There’s plenty of space for 2 or 3 special-permit parking spaces on the street along Morgan, Wilmington, and Edenton. Just make it happen and keep them off the sidewalk.
