Bring MLB To Raleigh

Instead of displacing things that actually get used, why aren’t we looking at sites with underutilized office space? Oh look! There’s an aging suburban office building right next door! Wouldn’t that be a better long term solution?

the biggest issue I see is that if this is really still 2-3 years out as it appears that gives Nashville (and Charlotte) plenty of time to get their financial houses and organzations in order as it relates to competing for this team.

Also gives Raleigh and Dundon more time for the same.

true, but seems we are close to being there already while the other two are not.

An idea…

and a very very AI attempt by chatgpt… can we make Rocky Branch creek into a river please?

I like the part where we are pretending that the Triangle is completely transit enabled. The sad reality is that we would have to deliver a stadium with ample parking. It’s not reasonable to expect that we have any semblance of a functioning rail solution that could even bring a small minority of fans to this location. That isn’t to say that I don’t like the aspiration of this idea. I do like it. I am just being a realist.
Colocation with the Stadium and Arena has so many things going for it including the entertainment district being built and the many thousands of existing parking spaces that exist there and at the fairgrounds.

With the recent Forbes article, MLB expansion talk is picking up. Raleigh is firmly in the “top 10” lists that float out there now, but Charlotte still gets more attention as a “major sports” city despite the many reasons that they make less sense than Raleigh as an MLB expansion franchise destination.

Curious if/when we’ll hear some stadium plans related to the Dundon/Raleigh bid any time soon.

This is all still at least a couple of years out I’m afraid which is what gives me concern these other “more popular” picks like Nashville and Charlotte have a lot of time to get their ish together with funding and ownership.

My take with the increased news regarding the potential cities for MLB expansion is that MLBRaleigh, etc. should determine these three things before an official announcement by the MLB:

  1. Name of the Team (Raleigh Oaks?)
  2. Stadium location
  3. Corporate Sponsors (for stadium/park name and funding partners)

I’m not sure that’s MLB Raleigh’s position in this whole thing. I do expect due to their influence in the grass routes awareness and contributions they may have a seat at the table though.

Yeah I’m more so referring to the entire investment team and MLBRaleigh.

I disagree with this for a lot of reasons.

The investment team won’t manifest until the MLB actually announces expansion intentions. Groups like this hold their cards close to their chest. They’d get a lot of egg on their face if the MLB delayed expansion.

It would also show your cards to your competitors. The people making these decisions like new and shiny things. It would be like making an offer on a house and showing all the other prospective buyers what your highest and best offer is.

I want to know about this stuff as much as anyone, but strategically speaking, making any kind of announcement of any of these things would be a gigantic mistake and give too much leverage to other cities.

Nice opinion article in the N&O from a Charlotte resident on why Charlotte should help Raleigh land an MLB team: https://www.newsobserver.com/opinion/article315820510.html

The Charlotte booster on here, posting on another forum, says Charlotte is the ‘dark horse’ that will ultimately steal the team away from Raleigh’s ‘loud and noisy’ effort, just like they did with MLS. Sure, because Charlotte, home of the Panthers and Hornets, is totally the scrappy underdog in this story.
