What would you say to a Charlotte-based media company asking about Charlotte. We all know Charlotte booster still think Raleigh do not deserve the Canes even now.
Could come down to who is willing to shell out for a stadium.
WILL come down to who is willing to shell out for a stadium
I should call in to this because my hot take is Raleigh would sell out the Panthers if they were here but the Canes would fail in Charlotte.
Just a bad sports city with a hunger for more teams to cover up for the disappointment that is their current teams. Should be more worried about filling BOA for 8 games with home fans instead of a baseball stadium 81 games.
Saying all this as a begrudged Panthers fan.
I swear he saying too many sides, making different stories it’s almost like 3-card Monty it’s scary. I’m just gonna ask Steve Malik if he’s willing to save us the panic and build Downtown South. I don’t know if that other NC city has the money to pay for a both a panthers stadium and a new field, but keep in mind they just shelled out money for a tennis stadium. I think this interview is just to hype up people over there. I start getting Raleigh leaders involved ASAP.
Raleigh has downtown south emphasized text waiting to be built. Did Raleigh do some TIG for DTS.
But if Nash like gets it will be the nail in the coffin for NC.
Charlotte does not have “a hunger for more teams to cover up for the disappointment that is their current teams”. Who has even been trying to bring MLB to Charlotte? Basically nobody. The only reason MLB to Charlotte keeps getting brought up is because there is a general sentiment that ON PAPER Charlotte is a better location in the Carolinas due to being able to draw from Asheville, Columbia, Greenville/Spartanburg, the Triad, and the Triangle. Plus potentially adding to the “85 South” rivalry that already exists between the Panthers and Falcons. And I mean nobody was really trying to bring MLS to Charlotte until Tepper swooped in at the eleventh hour and bought the Panthers.
The Panthers had historically been wildly inconsistent but generally well-attended until Richardson sold the team. If I remember correctly they lost Newton, Olsen, Short, Kuechly, Davis, and a few other fan favorites within rapid succession around that time. And then Tepper started provoking the fans with the Rock Hill project blowing up, the field at BofA getting replaced with turf, multiple terrible coaching and personnel decisions, wanting taxpayers to help fund a new stadium, etc. In decades past people stuck with the team during a bad year. But it’s a lot less forgivable when the owner is causing chaos and every year is thoroughly mediocre.
The original Hornets were pretty successful in the '90s until the George Shinn thing happened and the team moved to New Orleans. It’s telling that the NBA acted quickly to bring a team back to Charlotte. However, having the new team start out as the ‘Bobcats’ didn’t do any favors and it doesn’t feel like the current team has the same connection to the city as the original Hornets did.
I don’t think Charlotte is a bad sports city, but when the product on the field/court is constantly bad, the fans eventually find more enjoyable things to spend their time and money on. I used to watch the Panthers every Sunday but like what’s the point anymore.
Thanks for bringing that back to earth. The Charlotte MLB narrative is purely media driven. Either town can support MLB.
Corporate support is a HUGE issue.
Corporations buy luxury suites, 50 yard line tickets…in large quantities, pay a lot of money to put their name in prominent locations…like on a building……
Raleigh currently lacks those consumer facing brand name HQ. We now have 2 Fortune 500 companies: Advance Auto & First Citizens. LabCorp….down the road doesn’t really need to advertise they test your urine. IQUVIA is kind of/not really HQ’d here anymore……& they don’t need to advertise their services.
Historically, this has been one big issue for Raleigh……however that may be changing finally. Apple creating an East Coast HQ is bigger than people realize.
Just need another couple Fortune 500 relocations.
Great concept on purchasing premium group experiences.
The EPL has something similar for individuals and small groups. In the English Premiere League, the big clubs have “hospitality packages.” When I go to a game I usually go this route. You buy a premium priced ticket in a section, and you don’t actually know what seat you’re getting, but you know broadly where it will be (I’ve ended up in the first two rows a few times doing this).
You also have access to special entrances, a private lounge with a pregame meal and full bar (there are several of these throughout the stadium and yours corresponds to the one you purchased, but they are away from the action so people don’t just hang out in them the entire time when the game is on), and the seats you get generally are excellent.
As a fan, it’s a better experience than a “box” because a lot of times folks in boxes don’t feel like they can cheer the same way they would in regular seats for fear of disrupting others in the box.
Will a stadium site proposal be released with that information?
Nope. We have our opinions on the most logical spots for a stadium on our website, but there are a lot of moving parts at the moment. Dundon and the ownership group will likely be the ones to break news on land/stadium/funding when they are ready and have it all set in stone.
Given the complex ownership and agreements over at PNC arena. Where would a stadium there fit? Sidenote, can the PNC arena area handle traffic from both sports?
We do at least have RTP. That’s why the canes have Invisalign. And Lenovo WOULD be Fortune 500 if it’s corporate HQ wasn’t in China
How long do you think it could take. And is he considering taxpayer-funded or privately funded? I also wanted to know if the city of Raleigh is really on board.
I don’t think that’ll be a problem Advance Auto Parts, Lenovo, First Citizens Bank (who I think would fund the stadium), and Apple will buy the corporate boxes. I think Dundon’s team can wheel them in.
Pretty sure SAS would purchase a few seats.
Guys, Just wanted to say this to all of You! Hope for MLB Baseball in Raleigh is Wonderful! I gave up on this project but Thank God Lou & Team did not. I’m sure that his team had influenced on Tom Dundon . Yes, down the road, I fully believe that we have a good chance of making this happen!
