Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Raleigh

Ah, weird that it’s not working to link directly to the PDF. I updated the hyperlink to the landing page for the BRT project - see the link in the Aug. 19 update.

Looks like the original link had spaces in it. Sometimes browsers mess those up. I believe this link should work

i personally think local news should be talking about city council and zoning issues more than it does…i already know a forest fire is burning in the Sierras

Haven’t been around here much since moving out-of-state, so apologies if someone already pointed this out, but Megan Patton posted on Instagram that they’re going to start running the articulated buses on Route 1, which also explains why that route is getting shifted to Platform E and will only be sharing it with the 40X.

Move back. You’re the reason Raleigh is dying.

New Bern BRT Package 2 construction contract has been awarded! City Council voted this afternoon in the consent agenda to award the construction contract to the Fred Smith Company in the amount of $64,676,000, as well as a 10% contingency, with a total not to exceed $71,345,600. The engineer’s estimate for the package was $68,203,897. Rifenburg, the company awarded the contract for Package 1, was the only other bidder, but their bid for Package 2 came in at $71,978,396.

As a reminder, this is only the bid for construction of the section between Poole Rd and Sunnybrook Rd. Package 1, which Rifenburg was awarded in July, includes the section west of Poole Rd to GoRaleigh Station. The remaining package includes the mixed-traffic section from I-440 to New Hope Rd and will be advertised by the end of the year.

Thanks for this update. I watched the video from 8 months ago. A quick question: is construction still split up between vertical and roadway? or is it area 1, 2 and 3 all inclusive of Vertical and Roadway for each section. Or in other words, does this contract for Area 2 include stations? Looks like 2028 for this to be ready, wish it could go faster but glad it’s progressing.

Look more closely at the infographic from @Christopher:

…and the descriptions of the other two parts clearly says “excludes vertical station work within area”.

Here’s my best attempt at drawing out the routes of the 3 BRT routes that have some sort of diagram for them

Also, the Southern BRT just had the plans revealed a few days ago. IDK if there was a cost estimate before, but the city is now saying (just the Southern) will be $220-$240M. Judging by that, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Western route will be like half a billion lol

Maybe it’s just me, but those don’t look like particularly scary numbers when talking about transformational public infrastructure. We always seem to find money for other things, but we somehow always balk at spending money on transit.

Yeah. Complete 540 is like $2.5 billion. No one even sneezes at that.

I’ve been working on a similar map. This one includes all transit plans from the 2055 CAMPO plan.

Anybody notice that the Garner line will cut through Chapanoke Square? From some illustrations I saw it looks like they will have to tear down the Asian Supermarket there :frowning:

Yeah, that’s why it’s gonna be way more expensive and intensive to construct than the East line. The link that bennettzug posted above goes into detail on that aspect. It’s literally a new stretch of road.

They can be found here, for those curious: Wake BRT - Southern | Raleighnc.gov

The “Wilmington Extension” routing as shown on iMAPS was behind A&C and in front of International Foods – though since these are multilane roads rather than just lines, it’ll likely result in closing both. The original concept and justification are in the Southern Gateway Corridor Study.

Here’s the map of the road design… A&C will clearly be gone, international foods will just lose some parking
