Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Raleigh

Just want to do a vibe check on this:

Not even a drop of paint on the road yet. The point of choosing this corridor was to make it easy to roll out. When???

Are there any diagrams of what phase 2 would look like? Even any plans at all?

Construction is slated to start this year and I feel good about that actually happening. The biggest hurdle IMO is getting the big New Bern rezoning case passed. The BRT will move forward regardless, but lack of density on this corridor will significantly hinder its success in the future. We gotta show out to the city council meeting when the rezoning hits there. Already had lots of folks speaking out against it last time it was discussed at the planning commission.

This will be back in front of planning commission on the 29th and we need a TON of people to show up in support of the rezoning.

The last thing we need for the region’s first BRT is the cheap painted lanes version that other motorists will ignore with impunity. I believe the New Bern BRT line will feature the more extensive dedicated bus lanes of any of the four lines, so let’s make sure they do it right, even if it takes longer to get going.

I’ll try to be there, need an uber I’ve got my face covering ready, so NIMBY don’t get my new face since they troll and stalk me.

Agree. For those interested in attending, the meeting is currently scheduled for 4 PM. (It’s a Committee of the Whole meeting, not a Commission hearing. Looser rules.) The agenda won’t be posted until fairly close to the meeting date.

Are you coming to the meeting and signing up to speak up for support of the BRT rezoning?

could some type of camera device help stop that?

Hey all, if anyone is interested in engaging with City Council/Planning Commission on the proposed New Bern reasoning please fill out this form here:

Thanks!

The Planning Commission meeting agenda with the TOD zoning items is out and it looks like the meeting was moved to the convention center. I guess they are expecting a larger turnout?

Do you have to sign up to speak at this one?

Was planning on going but I have a conflict with the Western BRT community leaders group, which funnily enough is about the only thing I’d miss it for.

Hope we can get some folks out in support.

I do not believe you sign up to speak - I am pretty sure that’s only for City Council Public Hearings, whereas this is Planning Commission Committee of the Whole.

Seconded. The PC seems to have looser rules for public comment than council. I think this is because they have hard stops for their meetings ( I could be wrong) so if public comments take a long time, they just keep the items on the table until a future meeting.

Yeah. The last PC Committee meeting I was at, people just lined up at the podium. I seem to remember individual speakers having around 3 minutes to speak each.

It seems to me that the point of “committee of the whole” is to be able to convene the body without having to abide by its normal rules. So the whole point is that it’s a bit freewheeling and is largely run at the discretion of the chair.

This meeting is today at 4pm. I plan on attending along with other supporters. Come on out if you can, even just standing in support helps make a statement.

Or I guess if you don’t support, you can do that too.

4pm on a weekday? It’s like they want people who don’t have jobs to be the only ones commenting

I had to leave after I spoke but there appeared to be a fairly good turnout on the “pro-TOD” side including folks from WakeUp, Sig Hutchinson (former County Commission chair and current GoTriangle chair), and people from this board, the StrongTowns slack channel, and one of my Oakwood neighbors.

Would be interested to hear (from @dtraleigh or anyone else who was able to stay) how the remainder of the meeting went; I know it’s been referred to the entire commission for their August 8th meeting.

I left shortly after the public comments ended and then about 10 minutes of discussion. From what I heard, it mainly revolved around affordable housing. I think that’s what’s giving decision makers heartburn but you can see them being open-minded but certainly don’t want to vote for something that may rapidly displace current residents.

My sense is that this’ll be marinating through the summer and then be ready for a vote for this later. The commission does want to review each property that was asked for a change. It’ll take time but it’s a huge rezoning so why not.

Utility work starting on New Bern BRT!!!

Moving temporary power poles further back off project work area. All utilities will be buried ultimately.
