Business Expansion in the Triangle

Welcome to the site! That’s exactly where I was picturing too

There are plans to complete the 147 (soon to be 885) interchange and link it directly into Davis Dr and soon to be apple land

I can see my old Cisco building from here. Absolutely hated the area but that was in the early 2010s so maybe things are nicer around there.

I was basically kidding but I do hope some choose to live in DTR.

If so maybe Amazon will take SM3 or building on other side of capital blvd. Amazon seems to like big buildings in urban areas

Maybe that poor Whole Foods right there will finally get some customers!

The Apple campus in Cupertino/San Jose isn’t next to light rail. The bus itself will more than likely require a transfer.

Given this, we really should be opting for carpool lanes to be added to 40/540. This would encourage workers who more than likely will begin and end work at the same time to carpool (because it would save time bypassing traffic). I like to look at the emissions and a 4 person carpool is pretty decent; 3 people wouldn’t be too bad. https://www.transit.dot.gov/sites/fta.dot.gov/files/docs/PublicTransportationsRoleInRespondingToClimateChange2010.pdf

Edit to add: Unfortunately they may be buying homes in DTR or Durham. It isn’t good for the environment unless they WFH. This is the advantage of Hub RTP; It would give a reason for people to live near RTP. Good win for the region economically.

Apple was always going to come here. Everybody knew that once they bought the land. They just didn’t really want to make the announcement at the time due to political perceptions of HB2. Very happy that they have made it official.

There’s “express lanes” planned on I-540 to us 1 and all of 40 through the region. That could go a number of way though.

  1. True express lanes where everyone pays - honestly these people will probably still pay but there needs to be an incentive for Carpooling.

  2. HOT lanes. Anyone can ride in the lane who pays. But also people with 3+ in their vehicle can ride. This is what Charlotte just got on 77.

  3. Hov lanes (not going to happen becuase there’s no revenue) only vehicles that have 3+ people can use.

Hopefully we opt for HOT lanes.

Just did some digging and that acute investments has held that land since 2018

So Apple is coming again?

Yup! Good convo going on in the Business Expansion thread!

And as is typical, Raleigh’s play in this story gets diminished while Duke gets elevated. While they do mention that Apple’s COO (Williams) grew up in Raleigh, they completely omit that he got his engineering degree from NC State, or that he went to public school in Wake County (Sanderson). It’s not that I expected to see the story mention Wake County schools in a national story, but omitting NC State is slap in the face given that, you know, these are engineering jobs coming to the area, and Williams’ engineering education isn’t from Duke.
It’s sort of like how Russell Wilson’s 3 years being QB + a degree from State didn’t mean anything after his post-grad year at Wisconsin. NC State’s marketing folks need to be more on top of this stuff and get the university’s name out there when it matters on the big stage.

The article I read said he graduated from NC State and got his MBA at Duke.

Of course it did. It’s a local story.

Ah, you were referring to the national news for this. Gotcha.

I wouldn’t imagine that a national story about this would mention that the COO went to NC State.

Why not? It’s completely relevant to the local connections story being told.

I too worked at Cisco until 2015.

Park West Village and such have definitely made the area much, much nicer.

In addition to express buses on 540, there is a rail line right next to here that has actually been penciled in for rail transit at some point. It is the old Durham & Southern, which is currently owned by CSX. They call it the DS line. It carries local freight traffic only, very little of it at that- and customers continue to dwindle, as industrial users gradually sell out their land for suburban redevelopment (eg Triangle Brick).

Although it is orthogonal to the Apex-Raleigh commute axis, it is in a rapidly suburbanizing corridor that will become more congested in the future. It connects Apex, West Cary, RTP, and Durham. If CSX is willing to sell their S-line, it would be shocking if they wouldn’t entertain selling this for a song, too. It would cost money to refurbish the rails, but the small amount of local-only freight traffic means it could easily be pushed to overnight hours.
