As an SUV driver who has never hit nor killed any bikers nor pedestrians, I disagree.
It’s more about things being outside of the control of the SUV drivers themselves and more about how they’re designed. SUVs kill more because the target impact of the vehicle is higher and SUVs typically have less visibility directly in front of the vehicle itself.
The SUVs hitting pedestrians can be relieved by building better facilities for pedestrians and bikes. The frontover deaths can be relieved by requiring cameras in the front of SUVs that are above a certain height.
NJB did a video on it recently. He’s a bit harsher than I would have been, but I think most of that is because of the number of people bringing their giant trucks to the Netherlands where they really just don’t fit the design methodologies:
I believe there was an article in a local paper about the higher rate of child deaths recently, due to the design of the trucks and SUVs for the reason you state - the impact zone of an SUV/truck versus a sedan. As a cyclist they scare the shit out of me - I think the top of the hood of some of the boxy SUVs and the trucks is higher than my head when I am leaned over my handlebars.
Those giant pickups where the hood is almost 6 feet from the ground are absolutely absurd, especially as people use them as daily drivers.
A huge win! Being situated right in the middle of Triangle it will be a boon for all of Raleigh, Durham and CH.
Great news! That should be about enough space for that 3000. Hopefully it’s Phase I of more to come similar to Austin
Great news. With the office market struggling so much, this is quite the vote of confidence from Apple.
Also, 324,000-SF and only 73 feet tall is going to be quite the squat structure.
That would be enough space for Apple if their folks were hybrid workers, but I don’t think that’s their model. My guess is that this is for the first 1000.
This past weekend i drove though where the campus will be and i noticed that orange fencing and little flags were up along the road. Looks like they are getting ready to expand a two lane into a divided 4 lane. I was wondering if Apple was getting ready to start their campus.
Note the “Wilson is moving some of its corporate staff…” part
More news on the Apple campus:
Edit: TBJ reports that plans show six buildings including 700,000 square feet of office space, 190,000 square feet of accessory space and close to 3,000 parking spaces.
Those are going to be pretty small buildings.
Hilarious article in Financial Times today about VinFast.
Basically, they can’t raise any money from investors (very wealthy Vietnamese family keeps ponying up funds as opposed to outside investors) because the product is crap. Former employees think they moved way too fast on ‘engineering’ the car, cutting corners on safety and durability. Meanwhile, they’re setting up fancy showrooms in wealthy areas of California to show off the car that every review has panned - one person who commented on the article linked to a bunch of the reviews, with the one from InsideEVs entitled “Yikes”.
I didn’t welcome the news that they were building a plant here because I never thought they were legit. I hope it goes no further. Surely we can attract more viable and established business than this.
NC already has and continue to attract new businesses in the state. Anyone can set up a business or location here if they pass through the legal hurdles.
As long as the state doesn’t give away much and the site doesn’t turn into a white elephant the occasional bust is just part of being a good place to manufacture things.
I think your second paragraph is part of the issue here. Perhaps the state/county didn’t do their diligence. This company has been struggling for a while.
I heard the Vinfast really rushed the release of this vehicle before it was ready. And got absolutely slaughtered by the car press / reviewers. 6-12 month delay in the release and they could probably addressed most of these issues. Instead they rushed the release but the damage to the reputation may not be recoverable - ever.
Reminds me of Yugos in the 80s or whenever that was.
I was skeptical as well. The only “out of nowhere” car company that has succeeded to any extent recently is Tesla.
