Business Relocation/Economic Expansion

WRAL Techwire picked up the article and said a lot of vague meh in their article. Say it could be possibly Micron or another semiconductor company, then say there’s ‘lots of interest’ from other companies, etc. I didn’t realize they were waiting on an act of Congress first though.

However, the exec cautioned that no final decision will be made until Congress passes what’s called the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act. It includes $52 billion for semiconductor research, design, and manufacturing.

I like WRAL TechWire, but someone forgot to tell them that the Toyota battery plant will be at the Greensboro-Randolph megasite, which is decidedly NOT in the Triangle.

I was looking. Apparently the Senate passed the USIC in June last year. The House passed two alternative bills, which apparently did not include the $52 billion for semiconductor research. Pelosi and Schumer announced in December that it will go to conference and it seems the research will be included in some form though the scope of funds is up for debate. So maybe sometime this year. Maybe.

According to an article on WRAL TechWire, the local office of a national real estate firm is very bullish on the outlook for commercial real estate in Raleigh. It’s not focused on downtown, but hopefully some of that predicted growth will occur in the city center.

I’m not a Raleigh native, but have lived here as an adult since about 1978. I worked in or near downtown Raleigh for many years and have longed for development downtown to catch up with other parts of the city. I have looked at empty storefronts, decrepit buildings, parking lots galore, and driven on streets with uneven surfaces and potholes. The city as a whole just looked neglected, both from the private and public sector. There have been spurts of development and civic improvements (new convention center, Duke Performing Arts Center, Moore Square, Union Station, several office towers and a few hotels), but no sustained momentum. The tide has finally turned. The level of downtown commercial projects underway, announced, or in the planning stages is absolutely unprecedented. There will be growing pains no doubt, but the future of downtown Raleigh and entire city appears to be bright.

A shout out to @dtraleigh for creating, moderating, and hosting this platform. It’s my go to source for all things in and around downtown Raleigh.

I didn’t get that either. Maybe she meant less crowded?

Hopefully whatever needs to get passed gets passed as something separate and standalone. I feel if it gets piggybacked into anything more contentious, like the build back better spending bill, then I’m not confident in the current Congress to pass anything. You would think something like this that would help the American people (and the economy) would be a no brainer, but we’re talking about politicians here…

Did anyone post this yet? I haven’t been this site much over the holidays. I first saw this announcement in Endpoints (a pharma/biotech email newsletter that I get at work) but am posting the local announcement as many of you won’t have access to Endpoints (which provided a nice summary of the recent biotech/pharma additions/expansions for the area - referring to the area as “hot” for life sciences):

I work nearby to this development, and aircraft noise is just ear-splitting in this area so this (single-use, no residential) is a good use for this land.

just saw where INTEL announced today a 20B chip plant to be located near Columbus. Ohio. Could this be the one that was looking at Chatham County.

A little outside Raleigh but still think important news for NC as a whole. Looks like the Boom Supersonic deal for Greensboro/Winston-Salem Airport is going to happen.

“Gov. Roy Cooper’s public schedule for today shows he will be making an economic development announcement at 2 p.m. at the airport.”

$500,000,000 factory, 1,700 jobs at average $69,000.
Has order for 15 airplanes from United with option for 25 more and in discussions with other buyers.

A little more information

Mostly just adding that

Greensboro City Council, Guilford County Board of Commissioners, and Greensboro Chamber of Commerce have scheduled meeting and announcements later this morning.

Good for Greensboro & NC. Greensboro/Winston Salem used to be the economic juggernauts of North Carolina. Raleigh & charlotte usa were nothing towns. With the decline of manufacturing (furniture & textiles) & tobacco, the cities kind of began floating along while technology & banking blew up Raleigh & charlotte. Good to see some good economic news coming back (Toyota & now this one). Good stuff

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I feel remembering hearing Honda Jet (the airplane engine division of Honda) has something out there at the PTI airport as well? One would have to wonder if they’re gonna be helping out with this too.

Update to Supersonic airplane factory :boom:

Guilford County and City of Greensboro officials each unanimously approved incentive packages earlier today during scheduled meetings.

Yes Honda has a plant at PTI also, where they make all their very successful jets. 5-6 passenger I think.

I been saying this for awhile, those cities are the reason the Raleigh Durham area, had to put a plan in place to attract growth.
