view of City Hall construction site, looking at the Brise Soleil

Last week, the contractor installed the steel for the first level of Brise Soleil. In case you missed the May 1 project update, the Brise Soleil is a series of horizontal and/or vertical blades that help control the amount of sunlight in a building. The Brise Soleil will shade the new City Hall terraces.

Crews also continue to install the precast panels on the building. You can see the new panels along the back side of the building. The team has also completed the fifth level and is now working on the sixth level.

Taken from my car as I drove by while exceeding the posted speed limit.

You can see the exterior in the second pic.

For this week’s project update, the team provided some great photos of the inside of the building.

The images in the slideshow show the framing that is taking place on the first floor. The wall studs are being installed, the ductwork is being installed, and views of where the new Raleigh City Council Chambers will be located.

I drove past just after 2AM last night and there were dudes on the 2nd floor working with head-lamp hardhats on!!! Talk about “working around the clock” !!!

This structure is going to be 17 floors, correct? Final height will be?

Yes, 17 stories and 265 feet if the internet is to be believed.

I’ll be excited when I can finally see it peeking out in the view from Capital southbound. That view has gotten more and more “BIG CITY” over the years, and this is going to do some MAJOR HEAVY LIFTING in boosting that view forward.

Coming on to Capital from “Wonderful Wade!!” I am still taken aback by the real city feeling I get, as opposed to the sleep town I grew up with. I can’t wait to see if the Muni Bldg shows up from there.
How about some pics of the panels going up on the outside from someone who is in town? It feels like this building is getting very little photo love.

I keep posting lo-fi pictures just for Jake. What are you taking about?? :joy::joy::joy:

We have a meetup downtown on Thursday. I’ll try to take a 4k video and post it on YouTube for you. :wink:

I did think about mentioning if it weren’t for you, we’d have just a small handful of photos, but lacked a witty way to put it. That would be awesome and appreciated.
Your reposted update from the city did say that outside panels were going up, did it not? Bored minds need to know!!

It is official. The new City Hall building is now taller than the Raleigh Municipal Building (RMB). Crews are expected to have the building taller than the AT&T building within the next few weeks, and before we know it, the building will surpass the Professional Building.

A few weeks ago, the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Raleigh class of 2024-2025 stopped by to see the City Hall construction site. A few key members of the construction team met the two different groups on two different days at Nash Square. (Nash Square is a great, safe place to view the construction activity.) The contractors shared some fun facts during the visit, and we thought it would be fun to share those facts with our readers.

Fun Facts:

  • There will be roughly 113 miles of wiring in the building;
  • There are 3,600 light fixtures;
  • Approximately 2,000 tons of rebar is used in the building;
  • There is 2,490 cubic yards of precast concrete: and,
  • We have 57 subcontractors and consultants working on the project. In total, over 101,266.65 man-hours have been worked on the project. That’s the equivalent of one person working 40-hour weeks since the bicentennial quarter was minted in 1976.

Ok @pBeez and @Jake and all you other haters… :joy: (kidding)

I took several real pictures from different angles that are not from a moving car, stolen from a low res website, or from above only. I hope this will tide you over until there is more progress on this project. :face_blowing_a_kiss:
