Cycling on Greenways in Raleigh

Noticed the Greenway alerts showed the House Creek Greenway trail was reopened. Took that way home and was surprised it was done. I was expecting a full bridge replacement, but am happy that this is complete.

The Crabtree Creek greenway between Lockwood Park and N. Raleigh Blvd still has trail closed signs - at least it does at N. Raleigh Blvd. - but I rode the trail yesterday from Anderson Point Park to Duraleigh Road and back and had no issues with any closures.

happy to report is is complete today. it moved very quickly once construction started, maybe less than a week of fixing to be totally done. super thankful the city got this done so fast, just in time for spring

Some random photos from the greenway.

As I was walking yesterday, I happened to notice a camera under Blue Ridge road. I don’t remember seeing it although it’s possible it’s been there for some time.

Also while walking back from Shelly Lake Saturday, I ended up seeing 2 Raleigh officers on the greenway. Later that night on my way biking home from Slim’s, I ended up running into the construction again under 440 at midnight. I didn’t care as much since I was on my ebike. I’m looking to move to a different apartment complex so more than likely I won’t need to take this way anymore that late. I’m at least happy they haven’t really been closing it down during the day.

Just to be clear, are you saying the burned section of the greenway has been repaired and is now ready for cyclists/pedestrians?

Thanks

Noticed today they put a 4 way stop sign behind the mall at Crabtree Creek Trail and Homewood Banks Drive. Have to say that I’m happy with this idea. So far I have seen some people run it, but I expect people will eventually adjust. It would be better for the Greenway crossing.

On a secondary note. Took the Greenway to Ponysaurus tonight. In the hour we were there, we did see 4 other bikers (outside us 2) out at 9 PM on Atlantic. Granted it’s only 6 bikes but at 9PM on a Friday night, I’m sure more would ride if there were full bike lanes (I’d still prefer 2 way cycle track rather than 2 smaller bike lanes on the sides).

First screenshot shows 2 bikes on Atlantic going North.
The last 2 show the different bike racks at Raleigh Iron Works.

Phase 2 survey for the Big Branch Greenway Connector: Big Branch Greenway - Phase Two Survey - PublicInput

I don’t get why 48% of the respondents chose yellow. The streamside version seems to have fewer driveway and road crossings, and probably fewer ROW issues. And it’s prettier. I chose what I thought would be the most expedient, which I thought was the streamside option. Wonder if I’m missing something.

I was having the exact same thoughts. The trail along the road will have much bigger impacts to property owners, and cuts across many driveways and streets. As well as being less scenic. I don’t get it.

Does that yellow/orange path have any sidewalks? If not, I wonder if at least some of those respondents live near that alternative, and they’re just trying to use this survey to advocate for that.

Same. For me the streamside option (purple) is the best one. It’s the least disruptive, a very-close second place in distance, much more scenic, and, as somebody who bikes, having it flat is very appreciative.

Yesterday there was another community event to discuss phase 2. Here’s a link to CBS about it.

I went to the meeting and there was a group out front fear mongering, bringing up concerns of flooding and privacy.

My understanding is the many of the greenways have intentionally been placed in flood zones, because those areas don’t have much use otherwise.

As for concerns of privacy, I’m not sure how this is any different than a sidewalk going by your house, but from the article it sounds like they wouldn’t want that either.

If you haven’t already, I encourage you to respond to the survey. I think this connection would be a huge step towards improving the walkability/bikability of this area.

Controversy indeed - this is why we can’t have nice things…

Most greenways are where they are because the City already had easements (or had purchased land outright) for stormdrains and sewer pipes that parallel natural streams as they flow downhill.

Wow, ITB NIMBYs pissed off about something that benefits everyone, what else is new???

Voted. My concern with the Belvin option is greenway users will 100% have to contend with home owners parking across the greenway impeding it forcing people into the street.

It appears the Greenway closure at Crabtree Creek Trail under 440 is now done. I haven’t been that way for a bit since it’s no longer my commute route.
