Dockless Scooters for Raleigh

I did say “about” 20 mph. Which means somewhere around there. It’s not really as amazing as you think.

Take a scooter so that you don’t have to walk to your gym where you’ll run on a treadmill for 45 minutes. okay…
What ever happened to using ones own power to get around an urban neighborhood?
I mean, to each his own.
IMO, I think that nearly all of the scooter complaints come down to courtesy and behavior of the riders.

At least the part where @R-Dub was talking about is downhill and they will absolutely break 20mph going downhill. Glenwood S is a great example from S going N around Hibernian.

They do go pretty fast downhill I discovered accidentally. I think the initial bad behavior was related to the newness of the scooters and things calmed down a little over time as people became accustomed to them. Now we’ll probably start all over again but hopefully we can get some public education about how to ride them out there.

Sometimes I like to go around downtown and check out the different building projects in different sections. Walking several miles in the summer heat makes this undoable, but the scooters were quite nice for that. I also didn’t drive them very fast, used sidewalks if no one was around, and yielded to all pedestrians and cars. I also got no dirty looks and never felt in danger. I will be teaching the class on proper scooter etiquette.

Going downhill, it’s easy. Not like there is speed limiter on them.

They attempted(ish) public education. Could be much better of course, and/OR the PD could start enforcing existing sidewalk and traffic laws.

This may have been just the lime scooter I chose that day but it was definitely limited to 18mph. I tried to go fast down a hill (in the road with no cars around) and could feel the scooter actively braking to keep me from going over.

I would only use a scooter if I’d been drinking. Which is just the time to NOT use one. Such is life.
In Italy, if you hit a pedestrian, you loose your license for life. Crossing the street is a hard thing for Americans to adjust to. If you are going to cross the street, don’t wait just go. everyone expects you to walk into traffic and is breaking. If you stand there and wait, you confuse traffic. The culture if much different, clearly. They also have a lot more pedestrians in the urban centers than we do, and particularly unlike any of the intersections where those accidents happened yesterday. As with everything, you need a critical mass to bring about change.

After some bad experiences on roller blades, I’ll stick to walking or riding my bike. I’m not that reckless these days. :face_with_head_bandage:

And let’s not forget our friends Uber and Lyft!

When I was in Italy I noticed, if you were either a woman with a stroller or a nun it was easy to walk across the street. Otherwise I felt like I took my life in my hands. I figured I needed to go either buy a stroller or a habit to be safe. Lol

This sort of goes with the Jimmy Johns advertising theme.

San Jose Costa Rica is like this too. You can almost make it across the street and just when you think you have it made, a scooter zips between lanes of stopped cars and nearly gets you.

I had a really bad experience with rollerblades on a hill 20+ years ago. I’m with you on that one!

Are we doing better now? Not complaining, just pointing out what a big deal we made this.
