Dorothea Dix Park

It was great! You can control the temp and the music in car. Also, it has ports to charge you phone. I felt more safe in the AI car that I would have with cabs around me running traffic lights lol!

Hi, hope some of you will RSVP and join the NC Wikimedians for our Dix Park event series. It starts this Sunday, October 5 from 3-4:30 PM with an online Kickoff. We’ll be getting our bearings by looking at existing material and making plans to create and improve relevant content. That will also be a great time to ask questions about editing Wikipedia, for new folks or those who’ve been away from it for a while.

I’ve noticed lots of great photography on this forum. One way you could help would be by openly licensing some photos and contributing them to Wikimedia Commons. One caveat – there are some nuances of copyright law and Wikimedia policy related to public art that would probably apply to photos of recent art like the trolls. But photos of older public art would be wonderful!.

The insulation process for this art is no joke!

The new plaza is really impressive. It’s hard to capture the scale of this amenity in pictures. Thank you @svp for reminding me to come up here to see it! Amazing!

Now for a couple of pics not related to the plaza.

Turbo nerd moment of the day:

I was recently at the ASCE/SEI Electrical Transmission and Substation Structures conference in Dallas and there was a presentation on the sunflower poles at Dix, and they were a hit. There wasnt all that much info in the presentation, it was kind of just a quick easy one to break up some of the heavier technical material, but cool to see them in the national spotlight a bit.

Federal law grants railroads much broader protection from condemnation than other private property owners.

Indeed, and it works in reverse. NC law grants RRs the right of eminent domain, subject to limitations.

Couple of shots from around the park yesterday, including trolls.

Was surprised to see how much gutting “a few trees” really meant for the water pipeline though. It’s a substantial and unfortunate amount of clearing.

OOOOF damn that’s quite a scar on the forestland :smiling_face_with_tear:

This looks like it’s mostly pine trees. I thought they were removing some of the huge oak trees. Where exactly is this?

I wanted to head out there this weekend and see the trolls. Do you, or anyone, have the locations of the completed ones?

The three that are at least partially completed that I spotted yesterday are in these spots.

The specific clearing area from my pictures are basically this stretch right here from the edge of Dix Park closest to Pullen stretching into the Pine Forest.

Someone here mentioned that NCSU did not allow work on Spring Hill/Kendall Circle land, so it seems like they may have had to remove more trees from Dix than originally planned. It’s certainly more than “a few”, whether or not this was the plan all along or not.

I really hope there is an effort plant some back after the project is complete and/or to add some Greenway/boardwalk style walkway connecting from Rocky Branch Trail into the park because a 30-50+ ft wide land clearing stretching this entire distance is a shame.

I like the local color for the one that looks like it is playing a fiddle/violin.

Does anyone know if something happened with the one with the caution tape? I hope no one vandalized it!

From the looks of the photo it appears that most, if not all of the trees that were removed were pines. If they are replaced with pines that would be good as they grow very quickly, which is a good thing. I too, hope that is in their plans.

They could also put a greenway path through here?

Thanks - I am not going to loose sleep over loosing a bunch of pine trees. Those things grow fast. I thought they were talking about some of the large oaks the are throughout Dix.
