The renderer did take a little liberty with the curve.

Progress at Dix Park!

Also noticed this rainbow-like camera effect from the City Hall building:

WRAL posted an article detailing the next buildings to be demolished soon, this will really open up the big field areas, but I’m afraid most will turn into parking. Some days when we visit, people are parking all over the grass and side of the road.

If only we had a gondola mass transit system to our free downtown decks… Someday!

…seems like some more parking is needed, then, no? Now I’m not sitting here hoping every single lot these demolished buildings leave behind should immediately be turned into surface parking, but… maybe one of them? haha

the master plan is very thoughtful about parking dynamics and reducing the impact of the lots. no guarantee that’s being implemented right away during the demolition phases but would be nice to see that be case!

These stream restoration projects often involve a lot of re-grading and therefore cutting a bunch of trees. I’m betting that rendering is what it will look like after all the replanted trees have grown back for 25 years.

Probably still worth it in the long run but I’m betting it’s going to be a bit aesthetically shocking at first, especially while the work is underway.

Raleigh did do a great job with their Street Tree Equity Project as well as all the trees I’ve seen throughout Gipson Play. They installed balled and burlapped trees with 1.5-2 inch caliper so people got a decent size tree at planting. Hopefully the same can happen with this restoration.

The first building that was removed last year didn’t turn into parking. It’s fantastic open green space now. That should be the same plan for most of the rest of these.

More weeks old pics of new bike racks I’ve seen around the park. Note the small but imo important detail in the middle pic: scooter stencil. I’d like to see all bike facilities in the city refreshed to include scooter monikers. It bothers me when people ride scooters on the sidewalk next to a bike lane. Let’s call them ATLs (alternative transit lanes) instead and market the infrastructure to scooters and bikes, not just bikes. This seems like an easy way to encourage scooter users to leverage the appropriate infrastructure. It’s just paint.

In the short term, I think the city could partner with the vendors to have an education campaign to discourage this behavior. Doing that could somewhat resolve the issue. I’m sure the vendors could also geocode a riding restriction on sidewalks for their scooters? They already have location restrictions that prevent users from going past 440??

The infrastructure change could simply be painting scooter symbols on our existing and planned lanes. I’ve seen bike lanes in other cities have painted scooter and bike symbols.

Just read the other day that fireworks will go back to Dix park this year. Personally I think it’s a good thing rather than the location around Lenovo center.

Demo of old west campus buildings has begun!

Someone on here had mentioned that NC State also planned to get rid of this horrific eye sores on spring hill that visitors often say make the park feel creepy, but the last map I saw had them staying. Anyone know the latest?

Sweet, I can watch them from home

Sad, I like those. In this throw away country, we have the luxury of demolishing and rebuilding with the expectations of not being around for long…not a sustainable process in the very long term.
