you’re right! i found the correct perspective, the area in the renders is the grove
The renderer did take a little liberty with the curve.
WRAL posted an article detailing the next buildings to be demolished soon, this will really open up the big field areas, but I’m afraid most will turn into parking. Some days when we visit, people are parking all over the grass and side of the road.
Four buildings at Dix Park to be demolished in part of transformation project :: WRAL.com
If only we had a gondola mass transit system to our free downtown decks… Someday!
…seems like some more parking is needed, then, no? Now I’m not sitting here hoping every single lot these demolished buildings leave behind should immediately be turned into surface parking, but… maybe one of them? haha
the master plan is very thoughtful about parking dynamics and reducing the impact of the lots. no guarantee that’s being implemented right away during the demolition phases but would be nice to see that be case!
These stream restoration projects often involve a lot of re-grading and therefore cutting a bunch of trees. I’m betting that rendering is what it will look like after all the replanted trees have grown back for 25 years.
Probably still worth it in the long run but I’m betting it’s going to be a bit aesthetically shocking at first, especially while the work is underway.
Raleigh did do a great job with their Street Tree Equity Project as well as all the trees I’ve seen throughout Gipson Play. They installed balled and burlapped trees with 1.5-2 inch caliper so people got a decent size tree at planting. Hopefully the same can happen with this restoration.
The first building that was removed last year didn’t turn into parking. It’s fantastic open green space now. That should be the same plan for most of the rest of these.
