Going to sunflowers to get their summer salad for dinner and frozen lemonade to drink before going to see actual sunflowers across the street in Dix Park… Highly recommended experience

based on how i was reading the article I actually think that is a separate endeavor. I think the project mentioned in this article will go in the Brown Building next to Gipson Play plaza.

Replying to the announcement of this event, but this is intended for the entire community.
I went to the seminar/lecture this afternoon.
It was HEAVILY academic about the details of the hospital’s history, but there was nearly nothing about the future and the park. In fact, I looked down at my phone when the seminar shifted from the past to the park’s future and it was 1:16 past and ended up being 0:03 future. In those 3 minutes, it was extremely high level and used material that we’ve all seen previously. So, if you didn’t go, and had expected to learn something new about the future of the park, you didn’t miss anything.

The most recent demolition. Another building that we demo’d is now completely clear.
Like past years, there are a lot of folks coming out to see the sunflowers.
The view from the chapel is pretty cool. The new City Hall is pretty prominent from up there.

Yeah, I was a little disappointed by that. There were some interesting historical topics covered that I was unaware of, but I felt like the presentation left a lot to be desired. Not interactive, pretty much reading from a script, and at a pace and tone that I think most of the folks in there had a difficult time following.

That sums it up. I called @svp after leaving and told her it was like someone was just reading a history book to you while showing you the pictures.
A big problem with that venue is the acoustics. It’s really poor. Folks kept telling the presenter to slow down, but I do think that the poor acoustics played a big part in folks not following it very well.

Mrs. WCS15 and I both felt he read a somewhat interesting paper, instead of giving a somewhat interesting lecture. And acoustics (or was it enunciation/diction?) aside, he seemed to not have given a thought to what an audience of people who aren’t architectural historians would engage with.
It does seem like implied that the hospital was deliberately placed on the other side of both railroad and a creek from downtown Raleigh in order to keep the patients away from the town. But I honestly don’t know if I heard him correctly.

I definitely got the same message that it was at least symbolically on the other side of the creek, though I seem to remember that he said that they called it a river.
Interestingly enough, all of the state run institutions made their way to that same general area: Central Prison, Gov. Morehead School for the Blind, and Dix Hospital.
The biggest disappointment for me was that there was nearly nothing in the presentation that looked forward, even though “Future” was in the title of the lecture.
