You should try the brewery in Iron Works with the slide. I hear there are less kids there.

It’s ironic to me that the park whose theme is “a place for everyone” has the most anti-kid rhetoric on this forum…
That being said- I’m really looking forward to checking this place out! It seems like it will get a lot of traffic with the increased park visits!

Lol. It’s because it’s such a massive park. The argument that every space should be kid-oriented in such a large park doesn’t make any sense, at all.
By nature, parks attract kids and families. So if anything, they should intentionally create adult spaces. Like they’re doing with serving alcohol at HOMP and with the coffee shop (we’ll see what they do about the kid playground).
You all don’t like that some of us are calling this out. There are plenty of places to take kids at Dix park and around Raleigh. Not every space should cater to them intentionally. And not every space should cater to adults either. It’s a massive park with room to accommodate everyone. There is absolutely no need to cater every corner of the park to every type of visitor.

Maybe the state can re-open a wing of the mental hospital so all the kid hating adults can have a safe space in the park to retreat to when the kids in the park get to rambunctious.

You can’t restrict kids from a park and I wouldn’t want that. My point is: why on earth do we have to make the coffee shop in the massive park a magnet for children by installing a playground there? It seems very unnecessary. They can still do to the coffee shop and have kids play around as-is. Why are we making it a magnet by inviting kids with a playground at the coffee shop. You can put the playground anywhere else. It’s a big park so there should be more than just Gipson for playgrounds, I agree.

Maybe just go to one of the many other coffee shops in downtown Raleigh that is more adult oriented? Or one of the bars/breweries downtown that are more adult oriented?
Here’s the reality- it’s a park. There will be kids there. You can either provide something that will entertain them and likely make them less screamy, or you can say “ThiS AReA oF tHe paRk SHoULdN’t cAtEr tO kiDs” and then their parents drag them along anyways and they are bored and miserable and act like it. The only one triggered here is you and your hate for this concept.
There are plazas and areas in Europe where this concept is utilized extremely successfully. I’m not sure why it wouldn’t be successful here as well. Maybe give it a shot before being all dramatic over something that hasn’t even occurred yet?

before this, the flowers cottage was nothing. soon, it will be a coffee shop with a “small play area” that maybe, sometimes, you’ll see some kids at.
i really shouldn’t need to remind you what this park is going to be, but i’ll do it anyway
your small play area is probably going to be one of 20 playgrounds at this 308 acre downtown-adjacent amenity. if you squint, you can almost see it! meanwhile, there is an actual child magnet a stone’s throw away that you keep equating what i’m guessing will look more like a set of monkey bars.
guess what? the whole idea of this park is actually to cater to everybody. you should have put more stickers on the “no kids sections” when they were taking input. the city is transforming this place into something amazing, and you’re actually the one “triggered” over a jungle gym.

You obviously don’t have kids. Gipson play plaza is “the magnet” for the kids. The kids are going to be begging their parents to go to a real playground (Gipson), not some half-assed play area near a coffee shop.

Parenting of children in public is vastly different in Europe than in the US so I’d start there

Dix Park and this seems to be the old main hospital. I am assuming this will be torn down at some point. Am I correct?

Some of the most historic buildings were kept and reimagined, and some more will follow suit in the future. Meanwhile many of the non-historical buildings will come down over time. Some were demolished just weeks ago and they may still be cleaning up the piles of rubble. While I don’t have the masterplan in front of me, I highly suspect that this will be coming down.

The bottom left picture is the Mcbryde building, nothing has officially been announced. But they’re considering repurposing part of it.

I hear they are going to renovate it to include a coffee shop with a splash pad, and brewpub with a water slide, and a nightclub with its own Monkey Joe’s, to ensure a family friendly atmosphere.
