MAB and city leaders are rethinking the bonds for Dix and other parks. She says people may be reluctant to support the bonds with the economy tanking. Still planning for the affordable housing bond.

Not surprising, but disappointing. If they do delay, hopefully it is just a one year pause.

As is they have nice O&M cost that I don’t think has been dealt with. Wonder what the plan is there.

Can the current bond that was passed still work for some of the more minor park improvements?

Cleanup of the area, landscaping, maybe the creek improvements? I think even with the possible delay finally having this in the city’s domain + naming this as a park is better than nothing.

That creek bank work would be awesome. Its fairly disgusting down there now with the landfill all pushed up on it. Also a sizable homeless camp (by Raleigh standards anyway) is there too…not sure what they’ll do to help those folks but hopefully don’t just go in and bust it up.

Haven’t seen that. A bust-up would be bad PR especially during all this.

I know the creek is in bad shape. But now that it’s a park it’s more than just a ‘secret’ spot to go sledding when it snows. I’m most excited about the creek area since we don’t have a major waterway flowing through the city. I don’t know what is ‘allowed’ in the current budget/bond atmosphere right now, maybe someone else could fill in?

SW corner of Hunt and Western. They’re not trying to hide from greenway users so I don’t feel like I’m outing anyone. There is a second one further down that is pretty well hidden on the north side of the creek that only a venture off path for a pee break would reveal. Anyway, surely they will be warned in advance so at least they can move. More camps are all along the greenway so they seem to be tolerated and could uproot if that was what they chose.

I’ve definitely noticed a lot more highly visible camps along greenways lately. Like they’re not even trying to hide in the vegetation at all.

But the best one is sandwiched between the creek and Western Blvd just west of the Saunders overpass. This guy built an entire compound with a structure and everything. It’s been there for at least a couple of years, maybe even longer. He even has a lawnmower and I’ve heard him mowing a few times while passing by on a run.

Yeah that one is great. Its all nailed together like he knows building codes or something. Saw him grilling out there one day.

May have to ride my bike by there this weekend and check it out…

Guy sounds like he does more with his time than I do. Maybe the city could hire him to keep up the grounds. Gonna have to go check that out as long as parks are still open.

Its on the greenway (or more properly probably road ROW) which is open

I went by it today and it’s tough to see if you don’t know it’s there (due to all the new foliage that has come in). It’s much more visible in winter.

Interesting report on development interest around Dix Park

https://www.bizjournals.com/triangle/news/2020/05/01/cover-story-the-remaking-of-dix-park-raleighs-next.html?iana=hpmvp_trig_news_headline

Development interest is growing around Dix, causing prices to go up in what developers think will be one of next hubs of urban development in Raleigh.

The wave (tsunami?) is about to crash on Fuller Heights…

It’s been crashing for a few years. The thing that I think that has kept it from completely blowing up is that one family owns a large number of properties in Fuller Heights and have been landlording there for years. They don’t seem to be in a hurry to sell as they’ve been continuing to purchase more properties as recently as the last few months. Their properties are pretty slummy, so it will be interesting to see how things play out.

Indeed… :ocean: :house_with_garden:

That “family” owns a property next to me and are renovating it. Please be assured I’m watching

No Dreamville Festival this year. It was originally postponed to August 29, but uncertainty over the pandemic has led to its being cancelled entirely. The organizers plan to return next year.

I’m glad Dreamville happened last year and was a success, b/c man they have been snakebitten. Had to deal with a hurricane that postponed the first one, then COVID postponed, then cancelled this one.

I hope Dreamville comes back (as they are planning) and is successful when society gets back to normal. It seems like the first one was really well received, and it is a nice shot in the arm for our music scene.

On a somewhat related note (large music festival in Raleigh) I recently saw that IBMA’s World of Bluegrass is still scheduled for Sept. 29-Oct. 3. Hope that one can still happen while keeping everyone safe.
