Dorothea Dix Park

We’re doing the 5:45p slot so we can break the news first.

Well ok then… :flushed:

Perhaps my attempt at humor isn’t realized by those that don’t know me in person. I actually thought the wife would prefer the later time but she said 5:45p. Don’t really care about breaking the news, but I hope to be so excited about the info/details shared at the meeting that I can’t contain myself!

Also very excited to watch Ferris Bueller on the outdoor movie theater someday! :joy:

So the presentation was super informative, and the “Plaza and Play” area of Dix is looking to be spectacular. One thing that struck me that was said was “IF they can get the funding in place,” the earliest they could begin construction would be in one year (summer 2022). While I HIGHLY doubt that it will start that soon, I also gotta wonder where they expect funding to come from if that isn’t already in place… :grimacing:

I think there will be a bond vote on it. There was supposed to be one last November, but they decided to postpone it bc of the pandemic.

Hopefully that will pass, and hopefully they can also get some big- time donors to step up, in addition to small donors.

IIRC, there are some proposed changes to how donors are recognized which may help.

Wow - didn’t realize anyone still did real scale models. I figured it was all pretty much computer models at this point. Impressive.

The miniature model really helped visualize the space. They have so much cool stuff packed into just this small section of the park, I can’t imagine how wild the entirety of Dix will be once all is said and done. They are truly going for a national tourist destination with this.

It’s a very cool project. Too bad this phase has been delayed at least a year. Was originally supposed to open in 2023, now will be 2024 at the earliest. As I mentioned above, I think part of that delay is the pandemic and bond issue.

Last night’s meeting is up on YouTube

Isn’t there a budget surplus? Could they earmark some of that for the park?

They need to do 100 year ground leases on the 8 acre portion of the city owned land along lake wheeler that was identified for commercial development. The small yet noisy “save 306” crowd may have killed that option just prior to the master plan adoption back in 18. I’m unsure what the master plan now says about this type of public/private partnership

If I recall, the master plan kind of punted on it. Was low-key and noncommittal.

BTW @OakCityDylan I did want to remind you that I still beat you to the punch with pics from last night’s event even though you told me you signed up for the earlier one to post pics before I could :sunglasses: :kissing_heart:

HAHAHA!!! I actually ended up taking my wife on a date night because she had been out of town so I didn’t make it. I’m glad you did though! Thanks for the pics/info!

Worthy excuse! Well to make up for it, you can grab some drone pics of the area that “Plaza and Play” will go… just sayin’! (It is basically the current dog park and some of the lots surrounding the House of Many Porches)

Still looks like there won’t be much shade which was my biggest issue with the current one.
