No joke, as soon as I saw that picture I cursed under my breath that @GucciLittlePig was going to make a comment about it looking like a d–k.

LOL I didn’t actually say anything about what it looked like. But I’m glad you associate dick pics with me.

The stone houses are looking pretty good!

I’m also curious what this construction will be on the hill in front of the houses. These cylinders kinda look like art pieces, but :man_shrugging: :

From the Big Field to the Flower Field to the Stone Houses to the House of Many Porches, I’m always impressed by Raleigh’s ability to always come up with the most quotidian names possible for stuff.

Don’t forget the now aptly named “Dix” Park itself. :zipper_mouth_face:

Seriously though, the House of Many Porches name continues to crack me up.

I always mistakenly refer to it as the “House of 1000 Porches” and then think “wow that’s crazy that they named it as an homage to a Rob Zombie grindhouse horror flick” and then I realize “wow that’s not actually what it’s called I’m just dumb”

It’s because city staff are terrified to name anything anything for fear that it may offend someone lol

This goes back at least 30 years when they decided to name all new schools after the road they are or a place to avoid any potential offenses.
On the other hand, English has never been a poetic language when it comes to naming places and things. Oxford, is where the Oxen forded, Cambridge is where the bridge over the Cam river. House of Many Porches almost sounds poetic by that standard, lol.

These are fun tidbits!

In NYC, don’t they name their schools by numbering them? It could be worse!
Besides, what about our friends in Durham who seem to like to just slap “Durham” on their civic projects and make an acronym? Oh the creativity of it all!

I was listening to a local podcast the other day and someone mentioned some public art going in at Dix Park. They later discussed the sunflower power poles, so it seemed like there are two separate things. Curious if anyone has heard of any specific plans for public art besides the sunflower power poles. Maybe these materials are part of it…

What is this dystopian hellscape???
:joy:

Freedom young lad lmao

Wait… I’m just remembering this, the Dix Park Conservancy promised that there would be a memorial or art installation that honors the Native American tribes that were once located on the site.

So there’s a possibility that the art installation is either agriculture related (more recent history) or a Native American memorial (less recent history).

I was looking through some old Dix material and there was some discussion of a couple of projects: one was a large scale deer/stag which came from the coat of arms of Sir Walter Raleigh. I think they liked idea b/c there was a lot of public feedback that the art tie in to nature. The other was a poetry walk. Not sure if the materials are related to either of those…
