Dorothea Dix Park

Do you know if the State can force thru-traffic 18 wheelers to use NC540 to keep that traffic off of 40 through Garner/Raleigh/Cary/Morrisville?

I doubt it will be temporary but where is this located? Near the Stone Houses? If so, it’s probably going to be permanent.

Impossible to enforce.

From the artist’s Instagram Anne Lemanski on Instagram: "🎱 Happy New Year 🎱 2024 has been one of highs and lows. 🎢🛼🎢🛼🎢🛼🎢🛼🎢🛼🎢🛼🎢 Before Hurricane Helene, I was working on an exciting, large project, that will come to fruition in 2025🦉 I’m not spilling the beans yet, but I’m super grateful to have this project to look forward to! More down the road🤠 Wishing you all a healthy & prosperous 2 0 2 5💥⭐️💥 #happynewyear #bigthingsinthemaking"

Anyone know why they removed the flower patch down by The Grove / parallel to Western?

Just got an email from Dix Park regarding the grand opening of the Gipson Play Park. This is effectively the content of the email:

So no May dates? Or is there a soft opening? Confusing that they’d include May hours in the initial release or call it “Spring”

Ok going to rain on another parade

Bummer. I’ll be in Chicago on business starting that weekend.

and like clockwork, the complaints about the park and the playground are ALL OVER Facebook. It’s hilarious how many are upset at 1) slides 2) too crowded 3) easy to lose sight of your children 4) too artistic/not enough to do 5) cost too much 6) “worst park ever built” etc. The complaints crack me up.

Just be ready for the onslaught of complaints here by the general public too LOL

Maybe the contest with Downtown Cary Park should be who has the best complaints. :joy: Because honestly those sound like the exact same things the online trolls said about that one too.

…and these are the people that heavily influence, if not outright lead City Councilmember decisions for some f**king reason

Best thing about the Cary park (as a playground) is that it’s something different. There are easily a hundred modular playgrounds at public parks around Wake County - some of them quite magnificent, even. But they tend to be pretty similar experiences. The bespoke slides and equipment at the Cary park are indeed not a designed-by-committee, legally bulletproof, liability free design. That makes it more exciting and fun.

Another good thing about the Cary park, beyond the playground: 99% of what most parks are can be filed into the categories of kids’ play, sports, exercise, and nature. The Cary park has places to just hang out and things to do for adults outside of those four categories. You don’t feel out of place if you aren’t there for one of those reasons.

Anyway it looks like Dix and Gipson have a lot of the same, just on an even larger scale.

some people just need to bitch about everything. Build a new playground / park, and there will be people complaining.

I like that Cary park gives something to do in the evening. It’s a great place to visit even after the sun goes down.

Whoever says it’s the worst park ever built definitely needs their comment thrown out. The only way I can see someone saying that is there’s no soccer fields, baseball fields, etc but it’s also not that kind of park.

Some good underlying info from an interview with the design team on what to expect as Gipson Plaza + Play opens next month…

I’m not sure if this has been shared yet. This is the Dix Park 10 year Implementation Plan:

Sorry I missed this. Yes it’s across Boylan from the stone houses and the rusted pipe sculpture (which I love, others hate, but I’m doing no justice with my naming convention lol). The reason I said I hope it’s permanent (looks to be based on the 10 year plan you dropped) is because it’s in the same spot as the rotating “wings” exhibit from a few years ago. These are a couple of my pics from 2021:
