Dorothea Dix Park

I think this was a temporary installation that has now been removed. I just saw some of the art sculptures from this collection in Chicago.

Yes it was temporary and only around for the spring/summer of 2021. It was a rotating installation; some sculptures were neat, others a little much (to appeal to the masses at least). I’m saying that first pic is in the same spot as where the new permanent art is going.

Next steps authorized by the City for Dix Park: moving from the feasibility study to design documents for “The Grove” and the creek restoration.

This is possibly my favorite section of the whole park actually.

That’s where their building that giant parking structure?

Not sure what you are referring to. No giant parking structure planned for anywhere in Dix.

Gipson’s open for a private event but they’re letting anyone in rn. Come beat the crowd today like me. No words needed, just come see it for yourself :sun::sun::sun:

Will it be open tomorrow also?

What if you had to meet me in person? We’re downtown

My wife was volunteering at the event today, so I went towards the end to sneak a peak. It started storming so didn’t get to explore as much as I hoped, but really liked what I saw. I think they did a great job. It feels like a large expansive space when you’re walking around it. Picture dump to follow:

Lots of kids playing in the water.

Lots of seating and tables around.

Benches galore

Lots of interactive items around the Mill.

Looking out over the waterfall

Large sandpit

I like this view from one of the slides showing all the layers to the park

The nicest public bathrooms you could imagine

And finally the House of Many Porches views

I’m really rooting for this area of town to be dense, filled with small and large businesses (mostly local but also national), and closely connected with downtown via transit and bike/pedestrian infrastructure.

does anyone know if it’s open again today for the sneak peek?

No they’re not. Also annoying that they closed up early yesterday because of the 5 minutes of rain. People kept showing up and they’re like no come back next weekend. Obviously I ignored them and went around anyways. Forgot to share my pics tho and now someone beat me to it. Still gonna share them.

I grabbed some photos from a distance after arriving & being disappointed.

I had to soothe my disappointment with some howling cow.

It’s John’s favorite thing in the world. He likes it even more than walking. Let him tell you about it.

holy SHHHHHHHHH** these on-the-ground photos really do it justice. This looks insane. I drove past it yesterday morning and thought the wildflowers looked beautiful. Seeing them with the landscaping and playground in the foreground really make everything POP.
