It should be somewhere at the art museum park to help make a connection that I’m still not sure is there.
- What is “pseudo babble?”
- The people here are generally pretty energetic and engaged. Probably the opposite of bored.
- There is a little more nuance to the argument than for or against. This is the place to discuss it.
- Charlotte is mentioned quite often.
Cool kids and Cargo Cult. Coming up with inane labels for people with opposing views. That reeks of boredom. A few posters don’t want to lose out on a potential MLS franchise to Charlotte, big deal.
With the proposed details we have now, there is very little nuance. As of now it is binary choice/discussion. If future developments arise, nuance will creep in.
Cargo Cult might be the most inane label I’ve seen here yet.
Had to look this one up had heard of the practice just not heard the name.
A cargo cult is a belief system among members of a relatively undeveloped society in which adherents practice superstitious rituals hoping to bring modern goods supplied by a more technologically advanced society. The Cargo Cult members built replicas of airports and airplanes out of twigs and branches and made the sounds associated with airplanes to try to activate the shipment of cargo . Although the existence of the Cargo Cult only became known after World War II the cult had developed long before, when the Europeans first arrived in the area in ships.
SO guess saying some Raleighits are primitives looking to attract MLS by building a stadium.
Are you describing yourself? Build it and they will come? It’s not as binary as you’re depicting. Many people here don’t want to pay for a stadium of 20k capacity built on spec. Is the $1.9B in private development promised? I don’t think that’s clear.
My man Phil asked about my reference of describing elements of this discussion as “pseudo babble”. A few posters using phrases like " cool kids" and “cargo cult” is pseudo babble.
Quite frankly I don’t give a $&¿% if they build a stadium or not. However, I do think the Malik/Kane proposal is a good one for the city. Some don’t.
I only asked because the term “pseudo babble” doesn’t make sense. Seems like you are missing an adjective. “Pseudo Intellectual babble” maybe?
And I misread @Dave_M - I thought he was the one throwing around the term Cargo Cult. Apparently someone else brought it up previously. Either way - doesn’t seem to apply here.
I feel like this thread has taken a bit of a turn. While many of us are focusing on our disagreements and the negatives, I’d like to bring it back towards some common ground.
I think most if not all of us would love a $1.9 billion dollar investment that stretches downtown.
I think a lot of us are excited about a stadium located that is easily accessible to downtown.
I think the big sticking point is the city or county’s financial contribution.
Personally, I am a huge sports fan. Soccer, baseball, heck if DTR got a professional cricket team I’d be there. Because of this, my initial thought was, do whatever we can to make this happen. Then some people made some interesting points on the thread. I’m still super in favor of the project, but giving money away would seem foolish. I’m not sure that is what would be happening, so I personally am in a little bit of a wait and see mode for what details Malik/Kane will give.
I know a lot of people here want an MLS guarantee before construction starts. I’m not necessarily against this, but are there alternatives? What if they get rental agreements with Shaw, LiveNation, NCHSAA, etc to guarantee a certain number of events? A minor league NCFC and the Courage would still have games regardless of promotion so while that wouldn’t be as solid a revenue stream as MLS, it would be in use.
One final curiosity I have. If the city or county owns the stadium (I can’t remember which it would be, and browsing the thread on my phone is a pain) what would the expected naming rights bring? I’m sure it would be more if MLS is there, but still curious what the expected income could be and if that could offset any of the interlocal funds.
Maybe it’s my misconception but it seems as if some people have a problem if the stadium is privately owned or publicly owned. It often feels like a can’t win situation to me and I’ve mentally prepared myself for the entire thing to not happen at all.
I’m looking forward to the 5 story stick built apartments and suburban retail that will end up going there.
I think that far from the core, it would have the step down to three stories.
Not sure what’s going on behind the scenes but suddenly Malik is going ‘gloves-off’ on Twitter over Charlotte’s bid.
I’ve been noticing that. Kind of odd I think.
Agreed. Not really a good look this late in the game.
Steve Malik talks Downtown South
I was at the Arsenal game in Charlotte this weekend. I think the crowd attendance was around 34k at the game. We stayed at a hotel in downtown Friday and Saturday night and the hotel was full of football fans (soccer). I know we have discussed on this forum whether fans would come and spend the night in Raleigh if we had a stadium. Of course this is anecdotal but i was impressed with the amount of people who stayed overnight.
Saw photos from a follower on IG and thought it a pretty good crowd also.

That pic was taken from fuller side. The side that person was taking the picture from was full all the way up to the upper levels. I think they sold tickets for all of the north side of the stadium and none for the upper levels of the south side except for the lower side of the south side which you see from this picture. I think they did this so that broadcasting would show a fuller stadium. Unfortunately, the north side was the sunny side for the first half and it was extremely hot!
Edit: just noticed he took the picture from behind one of the goals. My bad!!
Malik was shading CLT yesterday from the game:
I went to the Dortmud-Liverpool game last year (took the train!) and thought they did a really good job. I think over 50k showed up. Granted, Pulisic was playing and that matchup was much more appealing than yesterday’s, but I don’t think criticizing Charlotte’s ability to host a soccer game is an effective argument. Meanwhile, Tepper just got an agreement from Ally to be potential lead sponsor of a Charlotte MLS team.
Add corporate support to the areas where CLT is passing us on the MLS potential. Hopefully Malik realizes he needs to make up ground on the $$ front instead of just throwing jabs on social media.
