Your comment about people who are “really into ribs” is a bit of a jab that seems to call my judgment into question. Ribs are my preferred type of bbq. I’ve eaten at some of the best known and most respected rib joints in Memphis, Kansas City, Nashville, Atlanta, and Austin. My judgment is that these are good, not great. It wasn’t just the tenderness but also the flavor. YMMV, but it’s not like these are the first I’ve ever had.
I meant no offense. Just considering what cooking style they make there. But if they’re bad they’re bad.
Thanks and it’s all good. And I don’t think they are bad, just not the best, IMO. I’ll stick with the excellent chopped pork and sides next time I go.
BTW, I sent an email to Bill King at DTR Alliance suggesting a BBQ Trail and he agreed it was a good idea and said he was going to loop in the Visitors Bureau and Convention Center and maybe include breweries. We’ll see if it gets any legs.
Can we crowdsource a map with those spots? Maybe we create our own for now, unofficially.
Thanks for the review, can’t wait to get over there! Totally respect your opinion on the BBQ and sides. I don’t think any are “wrong,” just different, which is what makes barbecue so great and fun to talk about. Funny thing is, that’s actually my favorite kind of cornbread, and it reminds me of my #1 go-to spot: Bunn’s in Windsor. They do a thin cornbread that’s very dense in the middle and crunchy on the edges, makes for a great sandwich. Basically a flat version of Parkers’ corn sticks. (Just hoping Sam does a tangy/vinegary slaw vs. savory/mayonnaise-y). A pic of Bunn’s courtesy of the barbecue bus…
Just made plans to meet some friends there next Wednesday.
Agreed. It’s like the bottom of the grits pot hours after breakfast is over
Raleigh Magazine did an article showcasing the different BBQ sandwiches we have locally.
(I’m sorry but Smithfield’s Chicken & BBQ needs to be on this list)
The only place on that list I’ve been to is The Pit. I’m bad at this…
I’ve had all of these expect Longleaf’s sandwich, and after looking at this picture I’m REALLY looking forward to them opening.
Friend of a friend started this place up. Hopefully this is close enough to DTR for the forum/thread:

I’ve only tried Longleaf once while they were packing up a pop-up they were doing at Transfer, so I didn’t get to try a pulled pork sammy (SOLD OUT), but the brisket was VERY GOOD. I am definitely looking forward to trying this exact sandwhich though. I find it funny that the only place that didn’t have a photo of their sandwich in this article was Clyde Coopers- I tried them once and the sandwhich had very little meat on it and was dry as hell. Not impressed AT ALL. The fact that they’ve been around for almost 100 years doesn’t mean much when their standard BBQ sandwich is mediocre and there’s all these other great options around now. Notice that the write up on them in this article essentially just focused on their age and their sides…
I was able to get my hands on the plans for Longleaf Swine (they are requesting bids from GCs).
Happy to report it looks like we will have our second outdoor smokehouse, basically book-ends of Downtown too (SW - Sam Jones / NE - Longleaf Swine). The outdoor space is definitely one of the highlights of this project with double the seating, a huge awning and fan system. The scope of all the work seems extensive and probably a years worth of construction, so not anytime soon. I am really looking forward to this coming to fruition and really activating this corner.

Looks great! Wonder if they can string up a bit more soft lighting for the evenings and nights.
Bye bye parking. Hello activated corner!
