Oh, but you KNOW there WILL be!
Whew! This could be quite the interesting hopscotch of ‘districts’ on either side of the Beltline around Wake Forest Rd…
That was my thought too, but buyer sounds like a property management firm - not a developer.
Ahh, well in that case, they’ll probably sit on the property until the surrounding area is built up, then sell for twice as much as they paid for it. THEN we’ll get some big stuff.
For those who don’t have a TBJ subscription, here’s the N&O’s article on the big news today in the Wegmans District:

The press release mentions the site’s strong potential for infill development, but also says the plans are “long-term,” so, yeah.
That’s such a large acreage that they could start selling piecemeal to test the waters. Once the large apartment building in the sears lot gets underway, I can see other pieces start to take shape in that area. The Lot on the corner of Six Forks and Atlantic has been selling for a while now. I’m very surprised that a developer hasn’t jumped on that.
All this development in this area is pretty exciting for me, as my condo can be seen in the aerial shot of that article. We just need some sidewalks on Atlantic and Six Forks.
Too bad the CIty would never consider something like say, punching Industrial drive under the beltline to connect the opposite sides of the beltline with something other than massive arterial roads that no bike or pedestrian will ever feel safe on.
The minute they did that, Industrial would become so clogged with Waze users avoiding traffic on the main roads it would be just as bad for peds/cyclists as the arterials. If not worse.
What about digging a hole under 440 and connecting Industrial Rd. to Navajo Dr. with a pedestrian/bike-only tunnel?
No doubt the simplest solution…easily dreamt up, always just out of reach…
Punching through Industrial to Navajo and somehow tying connectivity to St Albans on the east end and an Industrial spur back to Crabtree Trail on the other end would open up a ton of access currently choked off for all but the most adventurous…
BizJournals just posted an article about this:

Work on the first phase of Iron Works is expected to begin this year with the construction of a 7-story, multifamily building and the renovation of the decades-old warehouses, which will ultimately house creative office and retail space.
Work on the Iron Works is expected to continue through 2023.
Is that a bike / ped bridge I see over Atlantic?!
Wow to all of this. Exciting times in Raleighwood!
Certainly cheaper than a pedestrian tunnel.
Had to snicker about that funny wedge-shaped property not involved in the recent sale. That’s the location of the North Carolina Medical Board’s headquarters on Front Street.
This is very exciting. I’ve been waiting for something to happen on this since Grubb bought the land in 2017.
Getting Jamestown involved is huge. They are one of the best at adaptive reuse in the entire country. Ponce City Market in Atlanta, Chelsea Market in New York, Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco, etc. They are legit, and it is cool they are working on a project here.
HOLY F*** THIS LOOKS COOL!
-Interestingly designed residential buildings, and at 7 stories will be taller than anything else in the surrounding area.
-Renovation and re-use of very old, very cool warehouses; bringing more retail and creative use to the area and city at large.
-Looks like a pedestrian walking bridge over Atlantic connecting this to Dock 1053.
-…and looks like lots more to come.
Huge addition to this growing area. With this and the huge plot that was just purchased on the corner (forget the developer, but it’s the most recent purchase that includes the 2112 Percussion building) having planned 7-20 story buildings, this whole district could soon be the coolest, most unique part of the entire city IMO. I think it has that much potential- just need at least a couple art galleries and perhaps some more fun activity/tourist attraction type stuff and I could see it becoming a true destination. The ONLY thing I really wish was planned is a connection to Crabtree Creek/Capital Blvd - which would bring this whole development in direct access to the new Gateway Center plaza.
It would be awesome if we could figure out how to connect this development to the Crabtree Creek Greenway and Mordecai/Oakwood
Eh…maybe not since the two sides still won’t connect to much except each other. Though I do feel bad for a quiet side street anytime I’m routed through that unlucky side street
I only see the Wake Forest one and two belt line ones…am I missing something?
