The lack of urgency on basic pedestrian accommodations in this area from the city is something I do not understand.

Banking on developers to eventually do it for them.

Councilman Lambert-Melton made a request probably 6ish months ago for there to be a study into how pedestrian experience could be improved in the short term here, especially at the crossing over Atlantic.

Not sure if anything has come of that but can’t say I’ve seen it mentioned again.

I had a :bird: direct me to some information that might help if interest to this group.

First, the budget for the proposed solutions was approved (and funded) on July 1. For more information on what those proposed solutions were and will be, see the link below and a slide screenshot:

Progress…

But eliminate the slip lane, make that a pedestrian refuge, convert the right only lane into parallel parking, and make the center lane a straight / right only lane, keep the left lane as left turn only. There is no world in which this egress point needs 3 lanes West bound.

I don’t think you’re gonna turn an 18-wheeler onto northbound Atlantic from that center lane.

Someday the SEHSR program will close the Whitaker Mill railroad crossing.

Grade sep has always been the plan. Early plans had Whitaker on a bridge over the RR but current plans flip that and basically continue the Capital Blvd flyover over Whitaker Mill.

Bridging Whitaker over the tracks would have created some challenges. Are they planning to reuse the bridge over Hodges and Crabtree Creek? It was always a single-track bottleneck for SAL/SCL.

The latest design I saw (2023) has about 3 miles of single track from Captial Yard through just south of New Hope Church Rd. The existing bridges over Crabtree Creek and Six Forks Road would be kept as-is and not doubled.

Single track is perhaps not exactly correct, because the at-grade single track would apparently be retained, likely for freight use, from Capital Yard through just south of Crabtree Creek. The Whitaker Mill grade crossing would actually not go away at all; the passenger track would just bypass it on a flyover.

Couple more from there and the new watch maker Piaget offidce has TSA security you have to go into and out of the office. You can see it on the ground floor of the larger office building. Did not take a photo of it as someone was working on the door but check it out next time you are over there.
