Five Points, East End Market, & Raleigh Iron Works

I believe there is already sidewalks from the greenway to Six Forks, so it would just be a sidewalks from Wicker Dr to Hodges St

Found it in the rezoning request for phase 2:

The Capital Boulevard Corridor Study provides that certain bicycle and pedestrian improvements should be implemented along with described capital projects. See AP-CB-16 and AP-CB-17. The rezoning request proposes a condition to locate a bike share station at a mutually acceptable location on the property, adjacent right-of-way or along the existing Crabtree Creek Greenway Trail, in order to further the goals and objectives of the Corridor Study. See MAP AP-CB1. Additionally, the property owner is actively working with City Staff to determine a greenway connection to this property.

Tree clearing just occurred next to High-Park where the old garage still stands…

I think the nursing home owns it BUT I thought I read somewhere where the intent is to build multi-story with ground retail…

Am I imagining this?

Keep an eye on a rail spur in this area for some sort of trail use.

That’s all I really know right now.

Would love to see mixed use here, but last I heard the plan is still just an extension of the senior living compound.

Interestingly was just having this conversation with a friend. He used to ride his bike from Brooklyn 5 miles each way to Queens for Costco and just fill a backpack with purchases.

What was the presumption/conclusion about it for Raleigh?

Don’t recall seeing this here yet. The slideshow for tonight’s presentation on Five Points is up and can be viewed here. A short survey is up as well. Make sure you check out the project page below if you haven’t already.

Edit: this is probably the most interesting slide on the deck. I don’t think these are legitimate concepts, just general ideas that are being thrown out there.

The peanut shape is just rude to pedestrians and drivers alike

I like the peanut actually.

It slows down car traffic for pedestrians and bikers though.

I’m viewing it through the lens of car infrastructure per acre

It’s because of the weird 5th and 6th legs

I’ve played with a roundabout here before in CAd and honestly I don’t think it’s even possible to construct with proper radii within the ROW. 2 legs will probably have to close.

I would think that peanut was safer for cars as well because the legs are spaced further apart. Go :peanuts:!!!

I like the roundabout idea. Maybe instead of just some bushes they can make put some sort of column/statue in the middle. Like a victory column in Mexico City or Berlin but much smaller.

Do you know how the light signaling works at that roundabout? How many lights are green at the same time? I’ve been to Berlin, but can’t remember how the signaling works there at the Victory Column. I stayed at the Pestana Berlin Tiergarten hotel nearby. We were able to walk over.

How many lanes would the roundabout at Five Points or the peanut have? If it’s 1 lane, I’d be for it otherwise I like other plans that people have proposed here. Alternatively, we could play around with the signaling and have short light cycles which would cause cars to stop and then proceed forward (at a lower speed since they were stopped). There could be a rotation of the lights such as:

  • Cycle 1: Glenwood soutbound green only (all others red)
  • Cycle 2: Glendood north green only (all others red)
  • Cycle 3: W. Whitaker Mill Rd only
  • Cycle 4: Fairview Rd ony.

This would be a cost effective way since the lights are already there. I’m not sure how much programming/software would need to be changed or how much it would cost. Traffic may build up since it’s not green for 2 directions at a time, but this again slows down traffic for the lower speeds.

Thanks for the link!!

Dear God no. Neither of these please. No roundabout at Five Points!

Roundabouts are best for intersections where traffic is balanced. At an intersection where one road carries the overwhelming majority of the traffic, they make it nigh impossible for pedestrians to cross at all.

Just make it a modernized four leg intersection, giving oodles of space back to pedestrians, and be done with it.

I repost:

But, I went to that Walgreens once.

Berlin had victories? Last 2 wars didn’t seem to go that well for them…

I would love to see a giant statue in the middle of a roundabout at Five Points, towering over everything! I would laugh with delight every time I drove by.

Hah, they were on a good run when they built it. Beat the Danes, French, and Austrians back-to-back-to-back.
