Five Points, East End Market, & Raleigh Iron Works

So it sounded like from this meeting that there aren’t sidewalks along the North side of Whitaker Mill because there might be a grade-crossing built here …somedayeventually. I tried to look for any preliminary plans for that but couldn’t find any. Found some for Millbrook Rd, but not here. Made me wonder if its even in the preliminary stage.

That seems like such a lame excuse though. Can we not just have a ‘temporary sidewalk’ for the 12 + years until whatever bridge/tunnel is built??

Agreed. Even if it’s temporary, it’s just a sidewalk.

FWIW it has been proposed and it’s on the Raleigh Iron Works website.

i have no issue with that per se. i know that people here have described traffic speed near 5 points…also a tricky intersection, and that a number of driversthere drive well in excess of the 35? mph there. i had one of the digital signs placed in my hood in roanoke va and many would hit the brakes as they saw their excessive speed broadcast to many windows and other cars.

Not sure if this has been posted yet but there are some interior renders and info on the TRC-Salvage Yard location

“will be the largest climbing gym in North Carolina” very cool

Awesome! I like how they incorporated a large bouldering space so you can show up without a harness or have anyone helping you belay. Almost for certain people from one of the many breweries will show up after a few beers and try climbing.

What could possibly go wrong?

Wrong? I see nothing but righteous video content!! True “hold my beer” moments will be created.

Was thinking the same…one of the climbing gyms here in the Charlotte area has a bar with a few local beers, but won’t let you on the walls after you’ve had a drink. Probably will be harder to enforce at TRC since the breweries are nearby instead of inside the same building, but I’m sure their insurance policy strictly prohibits climbing after drinking.

Salvage Yard is starting to remind me of a spot in Austin that has a climbing gym (Austin Bouldering Project) right beside Austin East Ciders taproom. I went to climb there while visiting friends and it was a really lively atmosphere on a Saturday. Food trucks set up, folks climbing and then hanging around for some drinks and lunch from the trucks. I look forward to having something like that in walking distance!

Highest climber without tossing cookies wins!

I remember seeing some of this type of climbing on ESPN recently and looks like they’re broadcasting these types of events for a couple years. Would be awesome if they hosted something like that over at the new place. Fully filled out RIW would be a great advert for the world to see IMO

Could do a multiplicative points system.
Number of beers by feet climbed:
1 beer, 10 feet =10 pts
10 beers, 3 feet = 30 pts
20 beers, 0 feet = 0 pts

This is very cool. Indoor rock climbing isn’t really my thing, but I like that Raleigh is going to have such a nice facility near other stuff. Will really feel like a destination for those who like such things.

Tangent: I keep wanting them to make actual progress on the Swing tennis and pickleball facility near Brier Creek.

I don’t know y’all, climbing is incredibly strenuous. I think after the first beer I would be okay, but any more than that and the climbing just wouldn’t be worth the fun lol

I agree that Raleigh needs more things to do during the day that make it a destination that are not eating/drinking/shopping. This climbing facility fits the bill. And I am also eager to see progress on Swing.

Yeah, 100% agreement here as well. Would love to see how this area plays out once the climbing wall is installed. If it ends up being incredibly successful, other areas around Raleigh could try adding more fun stuff like this to drive traffic.
