This is not the kindest review of Charlotte.
As a comparison, this is the same YouTuber on his visit/drive through Raleigh during the middle of the pandemic years.
For the tennis fans here, the Western & Southern Open may move to Charlotte from Cincinnati! This is a huge tournament leading up to the US Open. I would love this!
It would require the building of a $400M tennis facility in Charlotte.
Reports of Western & Southern Open tennis possibly moving to Charlotte
i saw this. im a bout 380 miles from cinnci and 200 from clt. that is an impressive tennis stadium in cincinatti. if true, i just wonder what clt would have to erect to get it. i enjoyed my trip to the cincinatti openâŠneat stuff not far away. Winston salem and Charleston both have smaller tournaments, some pros have complained about having too many tournaments now.
Give me the Texas state capitol building or a similar grand one and I see your point.
NY Capitol? ![]()
No one in here likes it but itâs way better than ours. And more useful. Tell me this isnât the kind of historic building people actually want around still.

The whole Empire State Plaza district is so impressive looking. Pure 70s vision of the future with the funds to execute it. Shame they tore down most of their historic downtown to build it.
The article gives details on what they need to build, which includes 4 stadiums. $400M project. W&S was bought by a SC billionaire who also owns the Charleston Open tournament.
Fwiw, US pickleball championships were in Charlotte last weekend.
Cary going in more on urban/transit focused development.
I read they built this where they did to make Albany look impressive from across the river and intimidate the poor shmucks living in Troy. Thereâs still a ton of old buildings all over downtown though. Nothing being used properly and the whole city is pretty bad. Never really went there except for 4th of July fireworks in that exact plaza. The reverb off those buildings make each one sound like a cannon. Itâs intense.
This doesnât fit âflamewarâ very well, but I feel like almost all of the Triangle cities are doing a good job improving urbanity. Just need to keep focusing on the density aspect and transit will work well.
Lol any video with this in the description is gonna be utter bullsh!t:
âŠThey overbuilt apartments and houses after Covid hoping people would move here but growth was slower than expected⊠and now they have thousands of empty units to fill and canât find buyers or renters."
Dude seems iverly negative and talks about himseld alot! 12 minâs in and heard not one reason he disliked Charlotte. Is it really this easy ti make money on the interwebs?
Just announced that Charlotte has proposed a 400 million dollar project with 4 tennis stadiums in their new river district to lure the Cincinnati tournament there. Typical Charlotte.
This story is in the article I posted above last night and what sthomper is reacting toâŠ
The W&S is actually in Mason, OH which looks like an exurb of Cincinnati, so Charlotte would be a better experience for attendees who will have things to do when not at the tournament (most people choose night or day matches and not both). It would be a big loss for Cincinnati as this is a tournament that brings in the top players, unlike the one in Charleston or Winston-Salem.
Oh, no doubt itâs a âflamewarâ sort of video and why I linked it here. Basically it comes down to how he and his wife felt like they were treated in the city that leads to his rants. He has a few videos about the Raleigh and the Triangle and they are generally glowing reviews.
Iâve been to the Cincinnati one - the tournament and stadium are awesome. The drive to Mason and stuff to do around the complex are not.
Which is too bad, Cinci is a deeply underrated city with a lot to do downtown.
Iâve been twice and really enjoyed it both times.
Very interesting about the Western & Southern tennis tournament possibly moving to Charlotte. Iâm a pretty big tennis fan, and this is a significant tournament. It is a 1000 level event which is step below the majors and the year-end championship, but is the next level and top players usually come. It is the same level as Indian Wells and the Miami Open (there are a total of nine events worldwide at this level), so it is a top-four tennis event in the US and top 15 tennis event in the world.
I wonder how serious the possible move is, or if this is mostly a play to get leverage from the existing location for more public funds? Would be very cool to have it in Charlotte, I would attend, but would be a big loss for Cinci. It is the oldest pro tennis tournament in the US played in its original city. Will be interesting to see how it plays out. Does Charlotte have the appetite for spending money on this when Tepper wants new facilities for the Panthers and they are at least possibly on the radar for MLB?
On a Raleigh-related note, Iâm hoping that we get a low level event when the new Swing Racquet and Paddle facility opens, but we would not be in the running for something like this (w/o a huge change in planss).
