Future of Glenwood South

Not sure about the eastern part of the state, but growing up everyone in Surry County (and Carroll County VA) would cruise the US-601 strip in Mount Airy. It was almost hilarious how stupid it was, but then again what else is there to do on a weekend night? (Oh yea… my friends and I just went to Winston or Charlotte b/c we weren’t the cruising type ) Be cool… nobody tell my mom.

Most of my thoughts on that stuff are politically incorrect, and I’d rather not be banned from the DTR forum over something that isn’t even DTR-related :man_shrugging:

We need better land use, incremental housing, and schools/retail/services/places of worship in neighborhoods within walking distance for children which will help with community building and neighborhood trust, which increases social safety net and natural crime prevention (more eyes on the street i.e.) as well as intervening in people’s lives earlier when things turn south. That’s how you lower drug abuse and gun crime.

There @dtraleigh I fixed the thread

Truly, because we don’t want to hear it.

Public service announcement: When and if you get the urge to make political statements from the Onion, and etc… Twitter is available and free for you to use.

@evan.j.bost I couldn’t agree more with your statement. From a housing standpoint, building more communal spaces within mixed-income housing developments would be great. The Community Builders (TCB), a development company that builds affordable and mixed-income housing does a great job at doing this. The architects also focus on the “more eyes on the streets” approach when designing entrances, alleyways and neighborhood squares.

Perhaps we can begin to envision a post-pubescent boom for GloSo…(in 15 years…)?

And in 15 years we’ll be saying, remember when our president @anon8787296 was our city counselor and encouraged all of this rezoning so we can have this incredible city and skyline?

Aye. Let him run for Mayor first. Would not mind his type of leadership running the city for the next decade or so.

So, with another shooting in Glenwood South on Saturday night, I am starting to lose track of the recent collection of crimes happening this Summer. This needs to get under control.
I am all for folks having a good time, and I’m even willing to tolerate the occasional loud screaming and yelling at 3 AM that wakes me up, but the crime that’s happening is not acceptable.

I believe that in many instances violent crime is inversely correlated to amount of foot traffic in a given area. I’m a broken record but I’ll say it again. Paint the street some fun colors, expand the sip n’ stroll, and get rid of the cars and it’ll be a massive destination.

I understand it’s a difficult task to balance the safety of this area while still embracing the nightlife culture. Why not try something radical?

I’ve been asking for this since 2019; Austin and Nashville both have entertainment districts/streets, with more people, and fewer incidents. They both close streets to cars on weekends, establish perimeters, and manage ingress/egress. I’ve renewed my request to City Manager and Mayor to implement these strategies in Raleigh, at least on a pilot basis. We have to try new strategies. They work in other places. I’m told numerous reasons why it can’t work here: emergency vehicle access, rideshare pickup, curbside pickup/DoorDash etc. But I feel strongly we have to come from a place of “yes” on this issue; identify potential obstacles to implementing these changes and figure out work arounds.
