Future of Glenwood South

What’s up with all the murder on the Mississippi?
I’m going to guess riverboat gambling.

All about the neighborhood. County statistics mean diddly. West Cary Wake pulls New Bern Ave Wake rate down. Chatham county big land no people. Ain’t getting shot here unless you steal a goat.

Poverty my friend. Lots of poverty.

In the last 18 months or so, I think there’s been 4 shootings at that Tucker & Glenwood cross street.
Might be time to permanently place some police presence at that corner every Friday & Saturday night…

Yup. Nightlife districts will have crime, but if there’s a very specific violent crime hotspot, stick a cruiser there.

I have just been to Austin a week ago, great how 6th street area is a no car zone. But despite this and police presence there was some danger in the area. Can’t quite put my finger on it but we didn’t feel safe there. Glenwood South feels a lot better. That being said I welcome your suggestion, forward thinking and leadership. I think it’s a great idea
Rideshare pickup was not a problem, you just have to walk a block from the drop off

Okay so the problem with Glenwood South is that there is already a pre-built, extremely entitled residential population. It’s difficult to do anything because of this and all the ‘entertainment’ elements exist despite this.

Why doesn’t the city simply work on identifying a new downtown entertainment district free of these issues?

For example, south Salisbury Street near the Convention Center is a complete dead zone and an absolute embarrassment. Convention Goers talk and tweet (rip) a lot and there’s a good consensus that while the Convention Center is great, the location is terrible with nothing to do. However there is currently no residents in this area.

Hopefully the lack of residents/pedestrian activity will change once the two Salisbury Square buildings, plus the apartments wrapping the parkin deck get built. But that may be years out.

This is a whole Downtown issue. Mordecai, Oakwood, Boylan Heights, Glenwood really hem the place in. Glenwood is getting infill though and I suspect the whole box bounded by St Mary’s and Peace will be developed in some fashion eventually.

The future is in the Capital Boulevard corridor I think. Currently an undesirable industrial area, it will transform into downtown’s star residential neighborhood as the Pigeon House Branch Greenway and future stages of Smoky Hollow and Seaboard come online.

The biggest challenge to the close-in section of Capital is that it’s bound both east and west by railroad lines, which makes it more challenging to connect anywhere other than Capital itself. There’s a whole lot of narrow property that only fronts the Boulevard.

It is fascinating how much rail there is all around the city, along with the barriers it creates, but how that rail does absolutely nothing to help move people from point A to Z.

And it’s ironic that the rail lines make the properties along that stretch of Capital Blvd car dependent in the worst way.

The rail is still there under pavement in Glenwood!

Murdersippi they have high crime because of how poor it is.

Can you expand on this, please? I know several very vocal residents on Glenwood South and they’re quite reasonable and enjoy the environment they live in, for the most part.

you are assuming that most collage kids finish in 4 years and not 6.

One step at a time, let’s hope this sends a message.
