Future of Glenwood South

This is VERY encouraging! My perception prior to that article was the RPD wasn’t doing nearly enough along that strip during the weekend activity. Seems there’s more going on and very happy to see some progress!

Great! Keep locking these thugs up!

Can we also get rid of the sidewalk preaching?

Walked the Glenwood strip last weekend and won’t be doing it again anytime soon on a weekend night.

Some people may not have loved the noise and excessive drinking, but I used to love the energy around there and fully embraced the entertainment aspects. Now it feels completely unsafe. That’s a big distinction.

It’s a shame it’s become so bad.

The RPD presence always picks up steam when the news articles start drawing attention. A few months ago I commented to our usual group that goes to GS that it was increasingly apparent that RPD was devoting much less resources to the area. Fast forward to the current press on GS issues and now they are back. They just need to keep a devoted team in this area and assume that a night life hotspot will need extra attention consistently at specific times/days of the week. There appears to be policing organization that assumes when college is out that GS is not as much a priority. This appears to give rise to issues by turning police onto other areas and letting things get out of hand.

I can only speak from personal experience, but I haven’t felt unsafe there the past couple of weekends I’ve been out in GS - Most of the venues are targeted at people younger than me for sure, but it just seems like a rowdy nightlife district.

Of course, I’m a tall white guy, so ymmv.

Same, I have a blast. Seems like usual. But I definitely understand how not everyone may feel that way.

Do they make you feel unsafe as well? lol

Rowdy can be awesome. A Vegas pool party is rowdy.

Needing to confiscate 2 dozen handguns over a single weekend in a few block radius isn’t the kind of rowdy we should strive for, but glad to see there’s at least some effort to curtail random shootings.

I was talking about whether I felt like there was imminent crime around me versus actual numbers of guns. If it turns into Mad Max Fury Road at 2am, I haven’t been around to see it.

But to that point, the Vegas strip is also full of guns - I think to a certain degree any major nightlife district in a state with legal firearms is going to have them around.

That said, I’m very happy the cops are stepping up their presence, and lowering the amount of guns and their use is very good.

Exactly. And most of those arrested had drugs on them as well. Sounds like a situation where alot of folks with no intention of going to the bars/restaurants are roaming the area just hanging out and trying to deal. Not the same Glenwood South I went to 15 years ago…

Just kidding y’all lmaoooo

Hilarious!!!

I love crimeeeeee!!!

It was a joke but let’s be real - the only reason it appears that Glenwood has an overabundance of guns/“drugs” (those pictures just looked like weed and gummies lmao) is because the RPD just did a mass sweep in response to recent incidents. This kinda stuff is uhhhh everywhere all of the time in America. I wouldn’t lose sleep over this. Glenwood isn’t some sort of “crime alley” - it’s just a higher concentration of people than most areas of downtown with a higher concentration of alcohol fueling said people’s worst tendencies.

Yup. And when do people carry drugs around? They do it when they’re drinking on the weekends.

I’d rather everyone on Glenwood be smoking weed/eating gummies vs getting sh*thoused on heavy booze

I was joking too but Glenwood is kindof becoming a crime alley these days. There are alot more shootings, assaults etc than there were in years past. Even before these “sweeps”. I’m not saying 15 years ago it was the place to take your family on weekend nights, but it is getting worse.

The weed and gummies is one thing but the illegal guns and shootings etc is another…

I think you can just chalk that up to a buttload more people living here than 15 years ago. More people + tons of alcohol + “party street” = More probability for crime. This is in every major city in the US.

Maybe so. I’d be fine with an increase in police presence and these sweeps way more often tho. There are plenty of nice entertainment districts all over the country that don’t have to worry about shootings every other weekend.
