Future of Glenwood South

You talking to me?
I’m not sure how many here are residents of Glenwood South, but I am and have been for 18 years (and 9 years prior to that in the nearby Cotton Mill.
While I’ve heard dismissive comments in the past like ā€œIf you don’t like the partying, you shouldn’t have moved thereā€, I try to be less inflammatory in my responses. The reality is that the scene on Glenwood just wasn’t there when I signed my pre-construction contract in 2003. For example, what is currently Cornerstone was a collection of small shops and restaurants.
I like to think that I’ve been more than flexible in response to how my life has been shaped by the Glenwood party scene. I get woken up at 3 or 4 AM sometimes by people screaming outside in front of my condo, or by unmuffled cars or motorcycles racing down Boylan Ave. I determine my comings and goings from home on Friday and Saturday nights based on my ability to get home in the worst case scenario, and that usually results in me only going out those evenings by foot, or getting home by car by 10PM at the latest. In the end, I manage through it because I’ve been down this road before & I know that the scene will shift and the neighborhood will transform over time.
I have never once called the police to complain about noise. I’ve never once complained to my HOA, or been a ā€œKarenā€ about any of it. I try my best to have a balanced perspective.
HOWEVER…
This crime shit is where I draw the line. No resident of the city, no less the most densely populated neighborhood in the city, should be subject to the sort of escalation in crime that we have been experiencing this Summer. I want to understand how the RPD and the city are going to address preventing crime, not just responding to it and prosecuting those who commit it.

I sometimes go to Glenwood south near Hillsborough street and work my way to the Warehouse district, there is when I usually hang out with a friend, most times we/I will go out of town for the weekend. Warehouse district is abit calmer as far as the crowds go, but I’m not 21 anymore so I’m at the house by midnight, 1am the latest.

I get it. Crime is the main reason I moved from The Ware. Put up with the loud music and crowds at Transfer, it’s what signed up for. But my wife constantly getting accosted, package stealing, car break ins, and several shootings nearby, I just had enough. Neighborhood may look more gentrified now but its soul is still the same. Some may be happy about that, I was a naive outsider.

A few employees of restaurants on Glenwood were recently arrested for selling drugs (not just weed) at work. This could have been contributing to some of the recent increase in crime.

if i recall…this was a complaint of parking on or near clark from decades earlier Hillsborough st attractions.

Unfortunately I can almost guarantee that’s still going on at virtually every other restaurant and bar along Glenwood (or really anywhere for that matter). Some are worse than others but I’ve seen some things working at restaurants…

Back in the 90s when I was in high school, my weed guy was the chef at the Macaroni Grill in my hometown. I never actually got to eat there, but I feel like that would’ve enhanced the experience. I wonder whatever happened to that guy. Probably went to jail and owns a dispensary up there now.

Anyways, speaking of Glenwood South, looks like that patio thing is coming along well. Also that building being renovated for the Fiction Kitchen spinoff that fell through seems mostly done. And The Row at Glenwood seems to be getting underway. Man it’s been awhile since I was on this street!

This just reminded me…there was another 2-3 story development planned for Glenwood w/ restaurant space at the bottom and office space on top (I thought it was The Row for some reason but I guess it was something else). Wonder if anyone has any updates on that one

I believe it was the row. But looks like they chopped off the extra floors? Could be wrong tho

This looks like a really low cost placeholder building that’s intended to generate revenue until the price of the land increases and the owner can then flip the property for a jackpot. In the end, it’s better than a gravel parking lot.

That’s what I was thinking…If so, I liked the first version more

Looks like alot more illegal firearm and drug busts again this past weekend in GS. Keep it up and maybe it’ll start to die down.

I would love to know what happen to this development that would replace Cornerstone. Would definitely help contribute to the cleanup.

I suspect that either they are waiting for the office demand to materialize or are reconsidering having an office element to it at all.

Noticed that police had a big section of Glenwood blocked off tonight. Anyone know what the deal was?

Update: did some more investigation tonight while I was out. RPD has at least one whole block cut off to traffic again – definitely between Johnson and Tucker, but maybe some more further south (I didn’t make it all the way down there, but could see some more police cruisers in the road).

I asked an officer what was up and if this could be permanent and he said something to the effect of ā€œwe’re trying to figure out how to control the traffic. I’m not sure if it’ll be permanent, it takes a lot of time. We’ll see.ā€ I mentioned I liked it and he said others have said so too and agreed on it feeling safer.

Not sure if this is at all related to the city’s initiative (well, maybe more of a @anon8787296 project at this point), but hope there is some coordination there. It was only 1 whole block – and, from a pedestrian POV, I think the block just south of it where the Creamery is would benefit the most from this treatment – but I liked it quite a lot, even if this was just a traffic management experiment from RPD.

Long overdue to shut down Glenwood on Friday & Saturday nights. Hope this gets extended to reach even further up and down Glenwood South.

Yup, agreed here. It makes no sense to have a gigantic line of impatient drivers in the middle of a bunch of drunk people. I’m assuming they’re starting this now due to all the students coming back.

Does anyone know what the specifics will be or how to find out?
I would really appreciate knowing in advance of street closures days/times. I typically use this route when I’m leaving different places in DTR and I wouldn’t want to be delayed by driving down Glenwood avenue if I can avoid it :+1:t2:

If the street isn’t blocked off, you’ll be delayed from the traffic. I assume you mean outside of approx 9p-3a?
