Future of Glenwood South

Ah right…Cameron Crest. Bricking up and looking nice. But wow the price point is still nuts.

Honestly an affordable/student housing complex would be good for that lot in my opinion. I think it was one of the Shaw expansion plans but… anyways that would help the area out. Especially if it has a McDonald’s on the first floor and possibly a small library

I hope Glenwood South becomes a small version of Rockville, MD image

I believe that once the Smoky Hollow Project, 1…2…& 3 is completed, people will trickle down the next street expanding Glenwood South, I do see that happening, I’m not saying its a Bad thing, but it can and may happen. SH is a block away from GS.

With all of the discussion about Glewood South on other topics, I thought that it would be interesting to discuss where the party scene goes next as the district matures and changes. Clearly there will always be entertainment venues along the corridor like Hibernian, Carolina Ale House, Tin Roof, and other larger restaurant/bar concepts. However, it’s easy to imagine a lot of the small drinking/partying venues displaced by future development. In particular, I think that a lot of the small businesses between Peace and Johnson Streets have shorter life spans within the context of pressure to redevelop those parcels.
So, where does everyone imagine that drinking/partying scene is headed next? In my adult lifetime, I’ve seen it migrate from Hillsborough St., to the Warehouse District, and now to Glenwood South.
Where’s next???

I personally just think the nightlife venues will still exist, they’ll just get nicer. For example Smoky Hollow is getting a brewery and potentially another small bar concept

I definitely agree, but I’m talking about those places that are strictly drinking/dancing/partying vs. the concepts that are more mature and have food and a bit more mature oriented format.

I personally think there’s always going to be a handful of those partying clubs, some just may disappear, but there will be more that just eventually move into properties like the one Plus Dueling Piano Bar is in. I know CornerStone’s clock is ticking as I believe they’ve already sold their property.

I wonder if some of the party scene ends up moving to the Iron District and other proposed developments.

It’s interesting to think about where that sort of thing would migrate if GS truly grows up…
I think it gets splintered into some of these DTR adjacent areas - Brookside / Capital area if the Iron Works blows up, South St / Saunders St, the north end of West St as it abuts Wade Ave…?

Those are all real possibilities, and some of them I’ve also given some thought. One thing for sure, it will migrate.

I can’t imagine it moving a whole lot. Proximity to NC State and downtown are what keeps Glenwood South busy. If anything, I can see Hillsborough St picking up more of the business again.

Places that function like Cornerstone are going to either need to migrate somewhere else, or they are going to eventually cease to exist. You can’t replicate their current experience as a tenant in a multi-story, multi-tenant building.

Moving up West St. seems to make sense to me. There’s also still plenty of infill to be had between Glenwood South/Capital and Warehouse District.

They were putting up the Glenwood & Johnson St street lights up today. Definitely needed. It’s a challenge crossing that area as a pedestrian during peak Glenwood hours and driving across it from Johnson St.

Glad to hear about the light at Glenwoodm Was there ever a plan for stoplights at Johnson/West or Johnson/Harrington?

Walking from Glenwood to Smoky Hollow I could definitely see the need for Johnson/West, or at least a pedestrian crossing

I still think that those two intersections should be round-a-bouts

I’m still holding out hope.
