Not sure if this article belongs here or in zoning and density. Feel free to move it if necessary.
Not sure the best place for this since Raleigh has more of an honorable mention in the article, but it was CNN’s top story when I opened their website this morning.
Some fun history on parking minimums, the effects of said minimums, and the movement to eliminate and reverse them. Who knew a news article on parking could be so interesting.
The big news to me was no NC tag after mentioning Raleigh. We’ve come a long way folks.
And it was a positive mention!
As more demand for parking takes hold, so does the need to increase parking violation fees in DTR. No surprise that neighborhoods adjoining Glenwood South have the most issues. Raleigh considering raising fee for parking violations to curb downtown revelers
Come to Cary. Basically the entire city has free parking, No parking meters, free parking decks. Free. Free. Free.
Free = subsidized
characters
Well Raleigh subsidizes it and still charges you an extra fortune to park. Besides if you live in Raleigh and come to Cary it would be free to you right? I will subsidize your free parking with my taxes.
I have little interest in parking for free in Cary.
Boltman has succeeded yet again.
Relax Phil! Saying I would frequent the new location since I do not have to pay to park there. Sure many others feel the same. New location will serve them well, free parking just another attribute.
You can Venmo me when you park in Cary if that would make you feel better.
No, you said it is a must. I interpret that as - “I will never pay for parking.”
That’s a rather generous offer Gucci Pig! If I can shake the feeling of general crippling disgust when I enter Cary limits, I’ll hit you up.
It’s my understanding that the downtown parking decks owned by the city are managed by a department that must operate them to be revenue neutral so these decks must cover their operating costs.
It’s been awhile so I could be wrong but to my understanding, and it’s worth checking I think, that the decks pay for themselves. (no subsidies)
Raleigh still paid to have the parking decks built. Does revenue neutral mean that it pays back in entirety the cost of the property and the costs of building the deck along with the operating costs? That would be on the only way it would not be subsidized. But why is it important that it be not subsidized? It can be a service provided by the city just like parks, sports facilities, clearing snow, and whatnot.
Free Parking! Free roads! Socialism - It’s a slippery slope, Commies.
Agree! More business downtown, provide more feee parking. Too many pain points. 1st you have to find parking, then do the whole machine thing that never works, , then pay for the shit experience. At least make it free. Nix a greenway or three that never gets maintained anyway.
Put a toll on the bike lanes. Pay for the paint .
Still blows my mind that people think it’s hard to find parking downtown. There is an abundance of street spots and parking garages. Also, download the Passport app to pay for parking. Takes 10 seconds to pay for a space with it.
