General Retail/Restaurant News

whew I thought they were closed for good. I’ve only been once, but seeing them closed for so long had me worried I’d never get to try them again. Their food is exceptionally good.

Longleaf just announced that their permits have been approved. Still bummed that Oakwood Cafe went under, but this seems like a solid replacement.

Somehow this got missed by the community here, reported by WRAL on 4/22.
Trophy Tap & Table will become Young Hearts, a distillery/restaurant.

Opening soon. https://elementgastropub.com/

(Edit: According to reliable sources, the soft opening is tomorrow).

I think they said tomorrow is the soft opening. I’m afraid to go, though…there’s a scary guy staring in the window!

From the signage application…

I really like this white-washed signage. It really adds character. Like the signage for The Rockford, it really amps up the presence of the simple architecture.

Was sorta hoping that there’d be a DTR reboot of High Horse or his next concept would end up DTR
Alas, CaryLand.

Yeah I wish him well, but I’m kind of disappointed that instead of what I thought was one of the best restaurant experiences downtown, he’s opening up a Mexican restaurant for people who don’t like Mexican food in a strip mall in Cary.

That’s my run-on sentence for the year.

I think it’s grammatically correct though. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Maybe he’s going for something a little safer now and will open up something cooler later after the situation is more predictable. Hopefully.

Lol thank you! That makes sense and is totally fine. I support him, and he’s obviously felt the loss of High Horse way more than anyone else. I’ll definitely continue to support him regardless, but also keep hoping.

replacing the old Wild Wings Cafe in the Centrum shopping center.

for fans of the chef, it’s about as close to Raleigh as you can get in Cary…if you walk 2/10 of a mile you cross the line LOL.

it is interesting what a draw the 'burbs continue to be. More people living out here, more people with money, no plywood and demonstrations out here when people downtown lose their sh!t, so it seems less risky to open a high risk business like a restaurant when 90% of new ones fail.

I think it’s inaccurate to say it’s a Mexican restaurant for people who don’t like Mexican food, though. Sounds like he’s just trying to provide options rather than recreate “On the Border” about 1 mile up Walnut across from CTC/Epic Games. Crossroads and Waverly in Cary are becoming quite the foodie destinations at the expense of their regular “old school” retail.

I noticed American Eagle opened up in Crossroads in one of their medium size vacant storefronts. Things perhaps are on the upswing.

Suburban folk LOVE Mexican food lol the apartment I’m at until my house is done has a Mexican restaurant and every (nice weather) day since I’ve been here they’ve had their entire patio full. You would think they were giving away food.

To be fair, they probably do give away chips and salsa! :taco:

finally dated my first guy I’ve ever met who didn’t like Mexican food. I was stunned.

He’s not Mexican is he? That would be even more stunning! I never grew up with any Mexican food except Ortega hard taco shells with plain ground beef, shredded Kraft cheddar, and iceberg lettuce. Which is not Mexican food. I’ve tried to grow my palate and can always find a few things I like, but my girlfriend thinks there’s something wrong with me. :sob:

I’m just trying to help expand your palate. Consider yourself lucky. If I had it my way, I’d have some form of Mexican food at least 2-3 times per week.

That being said, I’m just happy to see Tanabe getting back out there with his own thing. Less flashy than High Horse, but I’m sure it’s still going to be delicious and a good experience.

If I remember correctly, he said that he planned on opening multiple places after High Horse. Hopefully this is just part of that original plan.

On a separate note, we were at Element Gastropub last night. Great staff and great food if you’re into the faux meat scene. I talked to the owner about getting sports on the TVs so that us meatheads that are partnered with those who don’t happen to eat meat can get the sports bar experience.

3rd point, Beasley’s opened for dine in, but its currently reservations only. Sorry for the multiple points in one post.
