The old city market building would have made an excellent food hall, but I think it’s too late to add another one so close to the existing two.
I think City Market is one of the most underutilized assets in the entire Triangle. You have an intact historic Market in the heart of downtown across from a beautiful park and it is a middle of the road shopping center.
IMO, it should be a top five attraction in the city. Our equivalent of Pike Place Market in Seattle or Ponce City Market in Atlanta.
Oh well, it least it is being somewhat used and not torn down. I hope at some point a visionary with deep pockets can acquire it and help it achieve its potential.
I keep thinking that the City Market central building could house tables for artists and craftspeople during the daytime and they could still use it for events on weekend nights. I was thinking of something like the Slave Markets in Charleston with almost a farmers market atmosphere but more crafty.
I kind of like the idea of continuing sanitation practices (maybe taken down a notch, but not by much).
In the last two days I was washing my hands in two different public restrooms (one was at a brewery) and watched women leave the stall, check their hair in the mirror or run their hands in water for two seconds, and leave the bathroom without actually washing their hands. Completely disgusting, even if COVID didn’t exist.
Regarding the event venue in the Depot: what a waste! Junction has been operating as both a salon and an event venue for years. I wish more event venues were active businesses in between events instead of empty buildings.
I agree that (some) people are disgusting but I think at some point the responsibility for hygiene needs to be shifted from the businesses to the customers (I’m sure some of the sanitation measures are not cheap)
Human beings are filthy by nature, but we also have an immune system to deal with it. Over concern with hygiene is a bad thing.
Completely agree, and that was my approach before this pandemic (which has made me a finally recovering germophobe). But touching pretty much anything in a public restroom makes me want to wash my hands for like an hour. If this pandemic has one lasting thing for me, it’s washing my hands after being in public all day and before eating. I learned it as a kid, but I guess I kind of let it go because, I agree about the immune system. Also, there’s been several studies recently about how these over the top cleaning measures (while well intentioned and originally a better safe than sorry thing) are actually pretty useless. I would be happy to see the QR codes continue to reduce waste, and maybe more effort than someone spraying diluted cleaner on a dirty rag to wipe down a table, though.
We moved here from the NE and have seen so many historic markets revitalized and turned into an attraction. The addition of Moore Square only makes it more attractive. The streets around it should be turned into pedestrian ways, although I don’t see any of this until they figure out a solution to parking. Has this ever been proposed?
Nice!
They should close all interior streets in City Market and make all streets pedestrian parklets. Let people park in the nearby deck. I think they only have 25 spots or so if you count every parallel park in the market. Would be transformational
What is the plan there?
They are going to corral all the NIMBYs prior to the elections coming up in the Fall.
Check this to get an idea
Not really news, but I’ve been passing by this taco truck at the corner of Hodges and Capital Blvd lately. I’m intrigued! Anyone happen to have tried it?
That’s Don Beto at that corner I believe (unless it’s a different one now) and it’s one of the better ones in the area. I’d go to them more if El Rey del Taco and Gym Taco already provide me with closer options
Wasn’t sure where to put this. But the Downtown Raleigh Alliance just released there Q1 report.
Not surprising, but still eye opening… Glenwood South District had 49% of all food & beverage sales in downtown Raleigh. Fayetteville Street with only 13%.
West Street Dogs probably. So I guess someone’s getting into the hot dog business after Snoopy’s gone. Pretty close to the Cardinal Bar however.
Yet there are people who talk about how Glenwood South is “over”.
I think that it’s in for a huge transforming this decade.
