General Retail/Restaurant News

Saw a nice write-up of them today. I’d be lying if I said I thought this was gonna be my new favorite restaurant, but I’m definitely interested in checking them out. (Shout out to the original Postmasters. I thought they were great.)

I saw that 2 Scott Crawford restaurants are opening at RDU, one taking over the 42nd Street Oyster Bar location. Black & White coffee roasters from Raleigh are taking over 3 of the 5 Starbucks locations. Beyu Caffe from Durham is also opening a location in there. Along with La Farm, Bond Bros, Raleigh Brewing, etc. it’s really nice to see such a local presence at our airport.

Big upgrade, and very in-line with modern airport trends. I’ll have layovers in JFK and Schipol today so I’ll have to compare :slightly_smiling_face:

42nd Street is my go to early morning place to chill after security before my flight. I have no doubt SC will have a fantastic replacement, but I’ll miss my BAU and will have a gap to fill during construction…

Triangle Food Blog is repoting Darryl’s might be making a Raleigh comeback. Also mention the Redneck BBQ Lab for North Hills is shooting for the summer for an opening.

Also for the Apex-area folks on here, looks like the TapStation brewery from the Mason Jar/Scratch folks is quasi-open? Saw on social media they had a soft opening this week and now posted they’re open for lunch today and dinner for this weekend so :man_shrugging:

The N&O did a story on Darryl’s a couple days ago. It is behind the paywall, but I will link it below.
The last Darryl’s is in Greensboro, and the owner is looking to build in Raleigh, Fayetteville and Myrtle Beach.
He is looking at really big spaces too! Like 10,000 sq ft, which is more than double than the old Hillsboro St restaurant, where I worked for too long, lol.

Nothing will ever compare to the original Darryl’s on Hillsborough back in the day!

@John are you old enough to remember the Circus Room in its hey day? By the time I started working at that location in the late 80s, it was already closed. I got to each lunch in there a couple times, but never got to go drinking in it. It has some mythical status in my imagination, lol.

Another piece of Raleigh-based business news, Lonerider is opening up a location on the west end of Oak Island. It will be great to have it on the island, I just wish it was walking distance to my folks, lol.

I was just talking about this maybe 2 months ago with someone.

I was saying that the next move for some these expanding city brands is to move out to some of the coastal destination towns.

  • Wrightsville
  • Surf City
  • Carolina Beach
  • Atlantic Beach (eventually)

Wrightsville and Carolina Beach may be more expensive, but like LoneRider just did with Oak Island, you could move in to one of these emerging beach towns and become the go-to spot.

I think Surf City is PRIME for this to happen in the next 3 to 5 years.

  • One of NC’s best surfing spots = culture influx
  • Soon to have the bypass to Wilmington and I-40 (making it a 20 min drive to Wilmington/40)
  • Lots of commercial spots open or soon to be open/developed.
  • Cool more trendy bars/restaurants starting to pop up and see major success

Trophy should tap into their Cloud Surfer brand and open a pizza and beer spot downtown Surf City where all the surfers come off the beach. They would run that town.

I think another brewery could work down in the Atlantic Beach/Emerald Isle area. Morehead City has some colleges down there and there’s the state port too. Crystal Coast Brewing has survived since 2017 and I would selfishly welcome another option down there. My family and I have been vacationing at Emerald Isle for 30+ years and there’s not too many options for breweries.

I believe the state limits the number of locations a brewery can have. With Trophy for instance, they have Maywood, Morgan and State of Beer. I think that’s the limit, or maybe it’s 4 and they have to include Busy Bee/Trophy Tap Table/Young Hearts Distilling location as well? There’s something to that, so with Trophy specifically, I don’t think they can expand beyond what they have now.

Just walked past the old Rum Runners in City market, and they appear to be doing some work in there. Could just be some upkeep, or maybe progress. Was gonna poke my head in and get some pics, but my fiance told me not to be that guy.

What does she know? Is she on the forum? I probably should have asked the 2nd question 1st and waited for an answer. If she’s on the forum, I think she’s a very cool person.

But get pics and ask for forgiveness after.

Do you know why they limit locations? Just curious.
