I was in the stationary store in NH with my daughter the other day thinking about the volume of stuff they have to sell to stay in business.
Garland is closing.

Noooooo probably my second favorite Raleigh restaurant. That’s so sad.
(Also, saw in the related links that St. James in Durham is closing - terrible day for good restaurants)
Very odd, but check this quote (emphasis mine): “It is with many emotions that we announce the closing of Garland in its current location. 14 W. Martin Street has housed Garland since its inception in 2013, and Kings and Neptunes since 2010,” Kumar and Siler wrote in a release.
bring back kings and neptunes then. it’s a shame probably 2 of the best spaces in the triangle got shut down, and never even tried to reopen
You’re not kidding. St James was closed for so much of its existence. The pandemic “closed for safety” stuff made me wonder how they would stay in business. Not sure if this is related, or more likely just the property owner not wanting to renew the lease so he can sell the otherwise empty block for development. I only went there once, had a super expensive tiny beer, balked at the food prices since it was just a casual stop in, and made an excuse to leave. I had intended to go back, but here we are.
Sad about Garland too. They also kept being closed the last 2+ years, but I kept meaning to go back. I really liked them.
Sigh…
They both probably got used to it being closed…aka, a lot less stress and work. I always wondered how these restaurants stayed in business without customers for so long. They may be selling to Hatem or something. Went to Garland recently, and it was fantastic.
They certainly imply that they might open somewhere else. Hope so!
I ate at St. James for the first time a couple weeks ago and had a fairly similar emotional journey. Excellent meal, great drinks, was shocked at the bill at the end for what felt like a reasonably casual place.
They are moving to Five Points Bickett Blvd back of the Anisette building that being renovated. Large patio in the back overlooking downtown.
I remember rumors of this on here a while ago - do you have confirmation? And source??
Oh wow, that N&O article COMPLETELY ignored all of that, WTF???
TBJ is claiming the Saint James space looks like it is making way for an expansion of Brightleaf FWIW
Seriously. This is a happy bait and switch!
not so fast- this news, coupled with their unwillingness to reopen Kings/Neps has me thinking that whole building may be going soon to redevelopment, which pretty much cements that Kings/Neps will never exist again
Much like the Berkeley Cafe, I’d never been to either. The Martin Street space should be available for new tenants, though, so something interesting could go in!
Sometimes I think we’re living the same life…
Because the N&O is garbage
You’re not understanding - it’s not the space itself being unused that worries me; it’s that Kings/Neps may never exist again. These spaces were two of Raleigh’s best music venues, and their loss is a loss to the Raleigh music scene and the cultural fabric of the city in general. Raleigh continues its descent into blandness!
