I didn’t realize there was any sort of movement on the Nash Square hotel as I thought they were going back to the drawing board?
Berkeley Cafe’s been central to the Raleigh scene for decades (they’ve been there 42 years). Hardly what I’d call a hidden gem.
I just meant for new customers (I have a relatively broad friend group that likes to eat and drink at interesting spots, and none of us ever mentioned or suggested it), but it sounds like that wasn’t central to their business model anyway. Might be like the Roast Grill where the owners got old and tired of running the place, or the empty lot is finally going away and perhaps they’ll open a new spot.
Cool, we won’t be able to make this one, so once again we’re missing a chance to finally go there. LOL
Not at its current location, though, right?
Seems to have been in the same place all these years. Here’s an article with some cool history (page 4).
Sorry, I was thinking of how Sadlack’s moved into the Berkeley from Hillsborough Street. I was confused; please disregard.
Shonna, Lisa, and Alex didn’t buy The Berkeley just to do it. They’re proud of their city and how it has progressed, and we’re proud that they’re putting in the hard work to save one of Raleigh’s musical landmarks.
So…either they changed their mind, or they sold. Haven’t dug into that yet. Or maybe they only owned the brand and operated the business, but not the property?
Note: Article was written in 2016 and even mentions the old historic oak tree across the street (which of course had to be removed due to disease).
but I thought it was removed because the City of Raleigh is evil and is waging a War on Trees???
Trees and Historic buildings, apparently…
How long have you lived here?
Two years almost exactly, so I’m not surprised based solely on whether I know about it purely from my own experiences!
Once I made friends through work/hobbies/etc, I had a pretty solid list of the places people who’d actually grown up here recommended to eat, drink, and hang downtown as things reopened. That’s what surprised me about Berkeley Cafe being such a beloved spot on this board - no one mentioned it when places like Kings/Neptunes or C Grace (to use a couple of similarly doomed examples) were popular picks.
Every bar has their crowd, nothing wrong with it not intersecting with mine.
Been meaning to share this renovation project in the works on Oberlin (right next to the Village People District). Existing building was just unpainted brick with a single entrance in front, now being painted, front entrance redone, and 2 retail spaces on either side added! Amazing reuse!
Luxury medical spa is one of the new tenants if you call that retail . Housewives of Raleigh hangout.
I consider retail to be goods and/or services, so definitely. A much more mixed-use of this building that was previously strictly office. I count that as a win.
Love it. More more more of these please!!!
Well done!! Looks super inviting!
