Good for Matt, I hope this does well, but this won’t be a new concept. He’s basically revamping Nana’s from Scott Howell, keeping the same name and traditions of Nana’s.
I really hope since Scott sold the restaurant and building to Matt he was able to make a decent return for possibly another restaurant or even retire. Scott’s been through some serious shit, back when Nana’s was one of our customers a 1,200lb grill fell on his leg and seriously altered the next several years of his life. A couple local publications wrote articles including Men’s Health.
I just realized in that WRAL article 4 square also closed, that’s a shame, their food was amazing.
Also responding to the Food scene in Durham, yes they do have really good restaurants, but they’re spread out all over the city. If compared to a list of every Raleigh restaurant, it’s not even close.
Went to Gringo A Go Go for lunch and snagged this photo; it appears most of the outdoor covered seating is in place, complete with lighting and picnic tables.
Excited to try this out, hope it’s actually good (never got around to trying the food truck)… nice to have more extremely bikeable options in east DTR! Just put a Sushi spot in Oakwood (or the vacated Transfer location) and our bases are covered.
Gotta say that his ignorant a-hole attitude during the height of the pandemic/Trump-era really turned me off of his establishments, especially when I realized his super combative social media presence seemed to actually attract a … certain clientele to his places. I’ll probably give it a go at some point, but my excitement for any of his new concepts has been severely diminished because of his social media presence. Dude would really benefit taking a break from his phone LMAO.
Honestly, I feel kind of the same. I’m happy for new small businesses, and I’d check it out if someone asked me to go with them. But his whole general attitude has kind of soured the vibe at his places for me. I have more to say about this, but I think I’ll just leave it at that.
Lmao @HardeesBiscuit eyerolled me so I must be on the right track
But yup, he just essentially called himself out as being a massive douche to other local businesses during a time when all local businesses were struggling, it’s hard to want to support a guy like that hahaha. But yeah I’ll leave it there, it’s a fun concept and I’m glad that a local guy, douche or not, is able to find success in his own city. Just gotta remember that this city is full of people on all ends of the political and social spectrum, and maybe try to not make your… uh, hot dog and/or greasy breakfast joints a platform for your political grandstanding. Just make the hot dogs and let em speak for themselves, bro.
The name may make some presume that, and it would be really interesting if that both attracted and distracted particular clientele.
That said, I can’t imagine what a deep fried baked-potato is, but it certainly piques my interest.
