General Retail/Restaurant News

This is awesome. I won an e-bike a few years back and probably need to get some sort of maintenance and… had no idea where to take it! I imagine this won’t be the last e-bike saleroom + service shop opening in Raleigh! Especially if Melton’s e-bike rebate program picks up steam with the city.

The photo is awful; it’s a much nicer space in person. I’d put it on par with Morgan St but Transfer co. is in another league.

Looks kinda like a fancy hotel lobby hahaha, but nowhere near as uninviting as some have made it out to be…

I’m seeing Neptune’s is open and if that’s true, my heart is glowing a little brighter these days.

Hope J. Lights @ Smoky Hollow fares better than their first attempt. They just announced the Durham location has closed. Not surprised.

Jeeez, I doubt it just suddenly started having problems then immediately closed… sounds like dude should’ve put his time/money/focus into making sure the original location was successful before venturing into this risky brand-new (and way more expensive) development…

Glad to see someone is trying to get a comprehensive retail plan for downtown. Hope they’re advertising this on more than just Facebook…

It’s on LinkedIn as well.

I applaud the city actively driving efforts for retail downtown, but I don’t think that they should be calling out the Fayetteville St. corridor for a specialized focus. Retail needs to align with “beds” and the foot traffic that those beds bring, and Fayetteville St is not the residential center of greater downtown. I think that the focus should build upon those areas that provide the greatest opportunity for success in creating highly walkable communities.
The city has a long history of trying make Fayetteville St. happen, and it’s poured a ton of money over time building things and tearing them down there. I get that it’s a VERY important artery for the city, but pushing needed downtown retail there when the greater demand for it is elsewhere in the core feels like a mistake in the making to me.
Go after the low hanging fruit first.

Too bad we can’t move that $30 million incentive from the hotel RFP and put it towards a creating or moving minor league team of any sport to downtown. Even if a stadium is only 5,000 or 10,000 seats, that’s thousand plus more people coming into downtown on a regular basis visiting downtown retail.

I would imagine a reinvented Raleigh IceCaps would score a reliable fanbase–especially since we ‘aren’t allowed’ a minor league baseball team.

I’ve heard through the grapevine that a lot of the businesses (owned by highly influential people) in that area want to bring a lot of the glory back to Fayetteville. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re partnered with the city of Raleigh in bankrolling this.

Highwoods is probably involved. They’ve been vocal about wanting to invest in the resurgence of Fayetteville which makes sense given their investment in property along the street.

That’s wild. Their Durham location was much better too, IMO (you easily could guess this from my previous comments though). If Durham couldn’t succeed, even with all the office tenants at Golden Belt…This doesn’t bode well for their new Raleigh location. Hopefully this means they atleast start consolidating/incorporating everything (food options and ingredients) from the Durham location that worked.

Highwoods:

  • wants to invest in resurgence of Fayetteville st
  • refuses to develop their GRAVEL PARKING LOT literally one block away

Pick a lane, Highwoods.

At least they acknowledge it. Good start.

They are not mutually exclusive. Highwoods wants both of these things; if Fayetteville St resurges, then their properties are worth more, but they want to hold onto them until after Fayetteville comes back so they maximize the sale value of their properties. They for sure aren’t going to put money into Fayetteville St for its own sake, but they might be willing to put some money into it if (and only if) they believe it will increase how much money they can extract after the fact.

I agree, I envy Durham, Greensboro even has some action with baseball and especially their new performing arts center.

I mean that’s fine but I still don’t like it :triumph:
