A Place At The Table was on Kelly Clarkson Show twice this week, Wednesday & Thursday. Kelly, Maggie Kane, the 101.5 radio host, WRAL all did a outstanding job in making Raleigh look like a great city. ConAgra gave a $10,000 donation to Maggie. Maggie is not related to John Kane.
This is better reporting than WRAL, thanks Dwight!
Neptune’s and King’s are both back according to the DRA!
Looks like work is finally underway at the Chido Tacos location on Fayetteville Street. Notice the white corrugated metal panel decor.
I just saw on the Triangle Food Blog that The Rockford has closed. ![]()
Glenwood South’s The Rockford, named one of Raleigh Magazine’s Best Restaurants of 2022, has closed their doors after a nearly 30 year run.
Also, not Raleigh but still surprising given their profile around the Triangle…
Chapel Hill’s TOPO Distillery is closing permanently on January 31st. Top of the Hill Restaurant & Brewery remains open.
Aren’t all the parcels around the Rockford (not including the Rockford) being upzoned? I wonder if a developer finally made them an offer they couldn’t refuse to get the last piece of property for a bigger upcoming development.
That has to be the case, we had brunch at Rockford several weeks ago and it was packed. Food was great too, this is an unfortunate loss. Not many places have the old building still intact while also having good food and atmosphere.

Sounds like there were some financial hardships.
TBJ article posted on Neptune’s and King’s. Cheetie Kumar (not in article: Cheetie used to be a bartender at now closed Rockford) and her husband Paul Siler are still owners and managing the King’s space and now they’re working with Martin Wheeler and his wife, Erin. The article doesn’t mention it, but Martin has worked at Locals Oyster Bar. No word on the Garland space.
This is correct! Basically Paul/Cheetie will remain the leaseholders, while Martin and Erin run the beverage program downstairs at Neptunes, and Nick Neptune (real last name, never affiliated with Neptunes as a venue but it’s a pretty fun connection) has spearheaded bringing both venues back for shows and entertainment. He won’t admit to being “manager” per se, but he basically told me that he’ll be a first point of contact for booking shows. Ray Coleman (aka DJ Chocolate Rice) will be first contact for booking DJs for Neptunes, and really anything else that can be booked down there as well. Overall, it’s going to be heavily community organized. Personally, I’m extremely excited to play the Cover-Up in a few weeks and an opening slot for a legit show in March - I haven’t played Kings since the Double Barrell Benefit 2020 - 3 YEARS!!!
Is Nick also booking for Transfer?
What’s the ‘legit’ March show, if you can share…?
No, Nick hasn’t been GM of Transfer for quite some time now! And has had nothing to do with the Ballroom becoming a serious music venue - the booking there is all done by Empire Agency, the local guy who works for them is Grant Golden, and heavily involved in all the booking and logistics of those shows (I’ve been working doors here and there to get my own foot in the … doors
)
As for the “legit” show - I guess I just meant it’s a booked show of an actual touring band, and two locals (one of them being my band) - not that it’s gonna be a huge show or anything hahaha. The local headliner is Reese McHenry however, who has some local pull. I forget who the touring band is but they’re out of Brooklyn, I believe.
Had dinner out tonight and randomly walked into the new Raleigh Popsicle Co. shop on Hargett. (We have no problem with cold dessert in January) I love their stuff and they plan to offer ice cream in the spring when they have their grand opening.
It’s their first solo location outside of Crabtree mall and South point so do keep them on your radar.
i wish them fortune…
I’ve missed LocoPops’ location in Raleigh, so I hope this does well. Will def be trying one!
I think they (Raleigh Popsicle) are better but I might be biased. ![]()
The annual James Beard Award semifinalists were just announced. Preeti Waas, chef and owner of Cheeni Indian Food Emporium in Raleigh, is nominated as a semifinalist for Best Chef: Southeast. That’s up in North Raleigh. Over in Durham, Kingfisher is nominated for Outstanding Bar.
Apologies if this is already posted somewhere else.
You are correct. WRAL posted an article about this today:
In addition to FK moving, we’re also apparently getting a new Latin American bar called Mala Pata as well as a “late-night ghost bar and market that will serve the communal alleyway” called Peyote Mini-Mercado (it’s part of Mala Pata).
Construction expected to start later this month. Tentative summer opening.
Gateway’s shaping up to have some additional tasty and interesting options.
