General Retail/Restaurant News

Well, Charlotte is closer to Texas than Raleigh is.

Born here, but I’m a heretic and believe brisket is the superior meat… Especially burnt ends. Nice to see the offering, although Longleaf is so close to me I can hardly justify going anywhere else.

I too love a good brisket, though I also love eastern NC Q.

The Green Monkey (currently located at 1217 Hillsborough street) is moving to 215 S. Wilmington St (former Raleigh Sandwich Shop which closed in ‘89).

It is a great neighborhood bar and gift shop and will continue to have both in the new location, plus a small patio in the back and more space for entertainment than they have now.

As reported by RALtoday, the Green Monkey, currently on Hillsborough and Ashe is moving to the old Raleigh Sandwich Shop on S. Harrington. I’m pretty excited to see that spot renovated given it’s been empty since I moved here in 2013.

That is a really fun place. The owners do a great job to make it much more than a bar/ bottle shop.

That’s fantastic news! Wilmington St. needs a shot in the arm. I had to look up what Green Monkey was, it’s a bottle shop like Tasty where you can drink on location. I’m actually glad it’s something different than a restaurant. It can bring a different clientele to the area that’s not going to Taz’s for 22oz silver bullets or Ramen next door.

Goodnight Raleigh did a write up about the old sandwich shop a while back.

Good replacement for Paddy O’Beers in that neighborhood.

Nice! Green Monkey always has a crowd when I run by - hopefully it can bring its loyalists down to “real” downtown.

That, and I think kind of a boutique convenience store, along with snacks I wanna say they also sell novelty/gift items too. Might be kinda redundant with Taz literally nextdoor, but they might have more high-quality items that Taz wouldn’t.

It’s nice to see more investment in the core of downtown, but I wish that the relocation had from come somewhere further out. Their current location is also the sort of urban(ish) neighborhood that I also want to see thrive!

Hopefully their Hillsborough location gets filled up quickly. Doesn’t help that the taco place around the corner went bust.

Maybe they’ll tear down the building it was in and build some generic student apartments!

Now if Taz’s can just disappear…

I know it can attract a scruffy crowd, but having a convenience store downtown makes a ton of sense. I don’t think just removing that amenity (and a locally-owned small business to boot) is the best thing.

Now, thinking about generally finding a solution for the drunks/homeless population around Moore Square is a larger conversation.

Dude LMAO - Taz has been there for decades, isn’t going anywhere. Lord only knows how many times it’s saved me before playing shows downtown when I needed a quick RedBull or a snack or something. The late-night rowdy crowd is simply part of the fun. Any city that actively works to remove or push out any of its “scruffy crowd” as @oakcityyimby names, is a city I do NOT want to live in.

If folks want unscruffy and sanitized they can always move to Fenton or NH, eh?

Looks like they’re doing work on it today.

Not asking too much just to make it tolerable. Everyday, and I mean everyday there is drama at Taz’s that involve law enforcement. Brings down the whole block and other businesses. The idea that you are not cool if you don’t like unnecessary bullshit is lost on me.
