Tagging so @tylerhelikson sees this eventually.
And I second this. Only was able to see from outside as we were moving but every drive by on the brick Tucker extension in The Hollow I was gawking at the amazing interior.
Well, that’s what I got, and it’s my only reference. I didn’t like it enough to switch from Howling Cow. I also didn’t like the suggested pairing of the scoops. FWIW, I went to H.C. yesterday for a single scoop for $2.99 at Talley. This is what I got.
Mustang House is open on Fayetteville Street but it’s dead inside even though there’s an event going at the convention center. They might need to get some shout out somehow.
Their signage is pretty sad - it’s just a plastic banner. Plus it’s in the pretty anti-pedestrian Duke Energy tower. Definitely needs some wayfinding help.
They should put some seating out on the sidewalk. Let people know there’s actually something there, plus give them a nice shady spot to eat lunch on these hot summer days.
The way that this building hits the street might be the most frustrating in the city for me. It’s like each side has its own different bad street presence (especially the side that’s a parking lot and a steel fence).
Apparently The Green Monkey is moving from Hillsborough St to S. Wilmington St (next to Tonbo Ramen). Open date is August 6th, according to their Instagram.
I knew it had been posted recently-ish. I even searched for it, but nothing came up. Oh well, a little reminder as we get closer to open date can’t hurt!
Don’t get me wrong, Union Speciap makes some good stuff. But, they’re only open during Monday-Friday from 8-4 and haven’t changed anything up in a couple of years.
They don’t open during downtown events, or times when that area is busy out of that set schedule. It’s odd because those are the times you’d think they see the most return on their investment. Not saying that it’s worth it (I’m sure the know their business well), but they’re in some direct competition for those hours and their price point is pretty high for what you get.
Sosta offers an incredibly good sandwich with sides for the same price that you get a sandwich at Union Special on Fayetteville St. There’s also a few other places that just offer a better deal for a weekday lunch. A bag of chips costs $3.
I’ve got a few other criticisms, but I’m frequently getting lunch downtown, and they’re low on the list because of value reasons.
The bigger piece is about half the size of a pizza that was sold, and those are normal-sized pepperonis. They sold it for $10. So, I can grab a tiny piece of pizza for $10, or I can walk over to dominos and grab a whole 12" pan pizza for $8.
In addition to this, they are frequently having specials available at their Gateway location, but not at their Downtown location. I’ll often see something that I’m interested in trying on their instagram, and have been serially disappointed due to the fact that it’s not available at the location I’m next to. Because of that, I’m not just assuming that any appealing offering they have on their instagram isn’t available at the downtown location.
Looking at their latest 20 food offerings that were appealing to me and that they have advertised on instagram, about 7/20 were available at the Fayetteville St location.
