That bodega by McDonalds is also closed.

I noticed that, although I hadn’t looked further into it. Blue Grocery. The new picture for it on Google shows a ‘Closed Forever’ sign on the front door.

About time it closed. Good riddance! It was a rat’s nest, rodent lodge and bug haven. They should bulldoze the entire property.

Anyone have any info on what is going on with this property?

A company named Acme Steel LLC purchased it a few months ago, I wasn’t able to find any previous work they have completed. The company was established in June of this year.

Did some quick investigation. ACME Steel was registered by a current VP in asset management at Empire Properties. So, either a personal project for him or another downtown asset bought by Greg Hatem.

It’s reopening as a wine bar/store. I don’t know if it’s the same ownership group as before, but it might be because the barber shop is returning (and moved temporarily around the corner in the same building).

Weird hate for bodegas/corner stores. Yeah the goods are usually priced for convenience (i.e. higher). We have a number of these still around, but the ones that don’t get hate from this group seem to be supported by a certain clientele. The ones that get trashed on are frequented by a different demographic. You can connect the dots if you want.

Bulldega is Durham is great and would prosper here.

Any other info on the wine bar/store? That sounds pretty cool.

New Deli on New Bern is coming along. Oakwood Deli in the former Acme cleaners building.

Raleigh Magazine reported that this location was going to be turned into a Fanatics Sports Book (basically a sports bar where you could put in bets in person). I’m guessing it was going to be a temporary solution for a few years until a larger sports book was put inside or next to the Lenovo Center (as was a part of the Betting Bill).

I think that idea was scrapped for the time being. What I do know is that they are going to be painting sports murals throughout the interior to give it a lot more character.

Who is opening the Oakwood Deli? Do we have any info or hints about menu?

I was excited to see the progress of Oakwood Deli too. It’s been hinted on google maps for a couple months. They have a website with info. Hope they do well, I’ll be a frequent customer.

Fifth Season Gardening has opened on Wake Forest Road beside Bowstring. I’m right down the street and will probably be a frequent customer. Excited to see more retail in the area. They used to be over on Hillsborough by the Harris Teeter. Not sure when that location closed. Theres also one in Carrboro.

In other area retail news, Flourish Market, formerly downtown and recently moved to Iron Works, is moving into a larger space in Iron Works.
The empty warehouse across from East End Market that East End Market recently purchased had some activity going on. Didnt catch the name but some clothing business was having a sample sale or something in there last weekend.
Also, a weed store called Hemp Generation appears to have opened in the former locksmith location behind Tobola Auto.

This concludes my summary of corner of Wake Forest and Whitaker Mill retail news. Not really downtown but its what I got. Thanks for reading.

That looks very cool. I hate that I’ve aged out of these places. I am 100% positive that I am not their demographic. I am at that age where I need a titanium AmEx to gain entry.
You youngsters let us know if it is any good.

We can do a meetup there. It’ll look like senior citizens night to the regulars.

I’m confident if you do a meet up there, you won’t cross paths with the youngsters even on the same night. You silly kids (old people) will be gone by 8 and the youngsters are just starting to get their hair did around that time.
