General Retail/Restaurant News

Saw a reel from the Experience Raleigh Instagram of the new speakeasy under construction in the long defunct space underneath the Sir Walter Hotel. Officially named “Question Raleigh” I guess.

Summary from Triangle Food Blog this morning:

  • Primo Hoagies, which uses bread from Philly, opened yesterday at 121 Fayetteville Street. This is their second Raleigh location, after North Hills.

  • Left Hook Coffee, the coffee hang-out inside Gussie’s, will eventually open a new location. Currently roasting coffee out of the old Hargett Street Laundromat at 912 E. Hargett St., this will eventually convert to a standalone coffee shop.

  • A new sports bar called Halftime Sports Lounge is having their soft opening today and their grand opening tomorrow. It is located at 133 E. Hargett Street (former Remedy Diner spot), and the full bar will feature cocktails, beer and wine. The interior is decked out with generous LED lighting to create a stimulating atmosphere (ugh) in addition to eight TVs.

  • A new tapas bar called Marian Cocktails & Tapas will open in Glenwood South this month. The fully plant based spot will serve cocktails plus globally inspired small and large plates. They plan to open at the end of January in the former Plates Kitchen spot. (So Plates couldn’t make it there, but vegetarian tapas will?? I guess we’ll see…) Its owners will also be relocating the vegan restaurant The Dirty V from downtown Apex to downtown Raleigh in the spring of 2025. (What a terrible name for a place to eat.)

Does The Independent have a category for worst restaurant name? If so, let’s nominate The Dirty V.

I know when I’m watching a sporting event, I want the room to be as full of colorful lights as possible. Preferably hyper bright LEDs. Really helps me focus when the Longhorns are marching down the field (and turning it over in the red zone).

I’m glad something is going into that space where Halftime Lounge will be, but based on their Instagram - it looks more like a hookah bar than sports bar.

Been watching the new Left Hook location like a hawk since it’s just down the block from me. They put it up on Google Maps within the last couple days with a few very carefully framed inside pics. Construction boards are down from the windows now and replaced with curtains. Fingers crossed this opens soon!

Left Hook is an excellent coffee spot…we go to the one in Gussies a few times a week and also love the staff there.

As for halftime “sports” lounge, I was excited for the idea of a new sports bar, but that’s clearly not what this is. The concept is… confusing. Seems like it’s actually trying to be a club, but it’s an odd space for that. It also doesn’t seem to have much seating for the advertised brunch. Hate to be negative and I hope they do well for whatever the target market is, but places with this sort of identity crisis don’t usually pan out.

Can someone PLEASE open a tavern/neighborhood bar/sports bar at the former Otomi/Brookside Bodega location???

Make it sort of kid-friendly during the afternoon and just more of a basic neighborhood bar with decent food/beer all other times.

MyWay Tavern replica, please.

Raleigh needs more places like this in general, imo.

I agree with the need for a neighborhood bar in the Glascock and Brookside location. It’s so bad for the neighborhood for it it be vacant. Anybody interested can go to DePersia & Associates – rdubrokers.com Or call 919-460-0100

There was something happening inside the space formerly known as Oak City Meatball yesterday. People taking pictures of a poured glass of wine from the window pointing outwards. Looked like a social media shoot. Assuming something is happening in there. Anyone have any info?

Checked out Willow House Coffee yesterday. Nice space and really nice people. The coffee was great as well. I like their space with the big windows looking towards the city. It will be a nice connection point once they fix the sidewalks / intersection around it.

That’s a huge space for a coffee shop! I suspect that it will get busy when it has more residential neighbors.

Yeah it is quite large! There’s also another couch space to the left out of the picture. I think they also have some outdoor picnic tables to the side. They mentioned they will be planning a lot of events over time since they have such a big space.

Curious what will happen when (if?) the City starts the road work for Lake Wheeler and the roundabout

There might be some growing pains, but the end result will be superior for them. They’ll have a strong base of walkers to help.

And I agree with all the other comments – it’s a super nice place with great owners and nice choices for coffee and not coffee.

In addition to Plates being replaced, Thaiphoon Bistro at 301 Glenwood Ave (next to Sushi Blues and The Hibernian) has been sold. After a brief remodel, the new owners will open up as an Indian restaurant and bar serving lunch and dinner.

Noooo Thaiphoon was the best reasonably priced Thai food in the area, and we already have a bunch of good Indian spots. Shoot.
