General Retail/Restaurant News

There was never going to be a 40 story tower on the mall side of North Hills, the rezoning application was just their request to remove conditions and then see what shook out. I have my doubts that it ever would have passed given the special class of NIMBYs that live in the neighborhoods surrounding NH, or if it had passed that anything would have been built to full scale or even started by now.

I have no clue what their plans for the rest of the mall side are but I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if the plan was to wait for the current crop of property owners to turn over (ie for the boomers to move to smaller housing/the CAC meeting in the sky) and try again later.

I could be wrong but I think that he was talking about Smoky Hollow.

:joy:

As John mentioned, I was just complaining about their failed Smoky Hollow proposal. North Hills is growing just fine for me.

Confirming that there is a new restaurant going in the Oak City Meatball spot. As for what, no idea. I walked by and the door was open and the space was being worked on.

They’ve also added new plants to the planters out front. I imagine we’ll know soon.

From Raleigh subreddit, seems Layered is closing and being replaced by a second location from Paul and Jack, another bakery.

The old Oak City Meatball spot is now Mazahua. And they’re open today. That was quick.

I look forward to someones report and review!

Finally a post on Instagram confirming Paul and Jack’s out of Wake Forest bought Layered (slightly annoyed that the new owners just call it “Layer Croissanterie” instead of “Layered Croissanterie” :woman_shrugging:t3:):

Goodbye delicious croissants and variants…and hello to every other type of pastry. :cookie::cake::cupcake:

I’ll miss Layered a lot but this place looks really, really good.

Apparently the owner sold it to someone recently and it went downhill, and now that person sold it again. Sucks for the employees and all the customers. Nothing against the new owners tho. I’ll obviously give them a fair shot. Just sad about the cool unique thing being gone. I also still miss buku and soca every day.

Never had a chance to try LayerED Croissanterie but recently had a chance to try the original Paul and Jacks in Wake Forest as I’d seen many social media raving reviews. It did not disappoint! The most popular item is their homemade cinnamon roll - sells out everyday at their original location. Only been once but the owners were working when I visited - they were high energy, fun and friendly. Certainly seemed to be first generation immigrants judging by the accents and style of dress (no stereotype or shade, just truth - probably explains the grammar mistake in the IG post). Cheesecake was amazing along with the cannoli - haven’t been back b/c Wake Forest feels like two states away from Cary so happy to see one open closer and in DT Raleigh no less. As we know, the 2nd and subsequent locations don’t always mirror the original(s) but if they achieve 90% of the heat they’re bringing in WF, it’ll be a win! Encourage anyone looking to fill the void from the loss of LC to give this place a try.

Was wondering if something was going on with Layered. They used to send out a regular email every month that included the flavors of the month, special deals, holiday deals, etc. Hadn’t seen one of those emails in at least a year.

I’ll miss the Kouign-Amann (especially since Lucette Grace doesn’t seem to have theirs anymore). But their extravagant sugary alternates never appealed. As a cinnamon roll lover, though, I’ll certainly be trying the new spot.

Lucette still has it, it’s seasonal - typically discontinue it in the summer and bring it back once temps cool off and humidity dissipates

Oh dang, maybe I’ll stop by this week then, thanks!

Glad my fishing for someone to direct me to a KA worked.

Little Native also has a kouign amann. Not sure where they get their pastries but they’re pretty good.

We went by here for dinner last night.

Seems to be an authentic take on a specific region of Mexico. All the tortillas were handmade corn, even the quesadilla. They don’t have chips and salsa, but the guacamole comes with pork rinds and chips.
They have some expensive dishes! :heavy_dollar_sign:

No liquor license yet, which was good for a Monday :slightly_smiling_face:

I walked up and talked with them a bit, and it looks like they’re planning on being open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner 7 days a week.
