General Retail/Restaurant News

Yes! I remember reading about them at some point and have been waiting for this. Saw some floor work going on there when I was at dram and draught last weekend and was hoping it was that!

This is not news, but if we as a county/city could open up these regulations, it would do wonders for small food service entrepreneurs to get on their feet.

I’m sure @Francisco is with me on this; we need real street food.

Yeah, that would be great. Just visit Portland at lunch time to see how amazing such a thing would be.

Haven’t been by this way in a while (it’s a whole half block off my morning walk route) but work seems to be progressing at Dusty’s (aka Sam Jones’ BBQ joint).

I hope so! They put the fencing up almost 2 years ago

It looks like there’s stuff going on inside which was easier to see in person than via camera. I don’t remember the doors being off the last time I walked by but hopefully it gears up. James Goodnight is notoriously slow in his rehabilitations/renovations.

Well that Fairweather won’t be tall at what, 5 stories? But it sure has a big footprint. Starting to get exciting!

98’ tall, I presume from the West St. elevation.

@KenAA It will definitely be the tallest thing in the immediate area, that’s for sure! Until the 12 story boutique hotel is built next door!

These sorts of places are really important to vibrant downtown neighborhoods.

Triangle Food Guy is reporting Katsuji Tanabe’s new Restaurant in Moore Square called “High Horse” opens Sunday Nov. 17th. That was a quick turn around, I have a feeling this we be a huge addition to the food scene.

The 19th is a Tuesday…

The N&O mentioned a soft opening Sunday, then open on Tuesday for their regular Tues-Sun work/serving week.

I’m excited to try this out. Never really watched Top Chef, but after hearing about this I did a little research. I bet the food is going to be great.

At the same time, I’m a bit worried about how they are opening up. Really no attempt to connect with the community, no attempt to (at least that I’ve seen) to collaborate with some of the local players. Just a big name chef rolling int and opening up and expecting his name to carry weight. Now saying it won’t work, just saying that I’ve been around downtown for a while now and people/places that don’t cut their teeth in this town, or don’t go the extra mile to open themselves up to the community in a “I’m just happy to be a part of what you have going on here.” have a much harder time finding success.

Again, I’m going to go and try it out and I wish the guy all the success in the world. Just giving an opinion of the optics and the vibe I’m feeling about it.

With companies, families and groups of friends looking for places to hold holiday dinners & events, I think that he’s picking the best possible time to open.

? What?. The guy is literally moving his whole family here to live and work here permanently.
He has been more active than most local chefs in the first two months he has been in Raleigh.
He has posted pictures with Ashley Christensen, going to the Hurricanes Games, sounding the Hurricane alarm before the one of the games. I’d say he’s putting his best foot forward in terms of local acceptance.

I’m wrong then. I was just saying that in my interactions around town and those I follow on social media, I hadn’t seen that outreach. I don’t follow him on Instagram. So I wasn’t at that Hurricane’s game and didn’t know he met Ashley Christianson (BTW I’d call those things more PR than connections with the community). I do know he’s moving his family here which is awesome and shows the true dedication he has to the area. As I said, I’m rooting for him and rooting for this place to be great. I live downtown and root for Raleigh, so what better for the city than a big name chef doing something extremely successful here.

I guess what I’m saying is that I think it would be beneficial for him to build up some hype via some local channels. Look at Long Leaf Swine for instance. They are about to open a restaurant downtown. You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who wasn’t aware of that. The guys are literally at EVERY event possible, they are donating money back to charity when they serve at charity events, and they are working a pretty grueling schedule just to show their dedication to the city and their craft. The same goes for Ex-Votto Taco. I don’t know the first things about those guys or their story, but they are EVERYWHERE right now and they are collaborating with just about any and everyone they can downtown. Are they from here? Are they good people? Is the food good? I don’t know, but I already am intrigued and looking to find out more based on their hustle and those they are surrounding themselves with.

I’m not saying everyone has to take that route to be successful. This wasn’t a public jab at the guy, I was just sharing the vibe I was getting. I’m just saying that the route Long Leaf Swine and Ex-Votto are taking, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen really fail in this town. Raleigh kind of rewards that sense of hustle to connect and serve.

Well, I knew about Tanabe but didn’t know about Long Leaf Swine, so there’s that.
