If only we didn’t lose Oakwood Cafe during covid .
The menu is also kind of a bummer for non meat eaters, pimento cheese sandwich would be an easy win. Plus $3 or $2 more for the non meat burger does not compute, how I am reading that line. Gringo and Longleaf have it down.
When in doubt, all things made with Cuban bread, including just the bread itself, gets pressed! It crisps the outside while leaving the inside soft. It’s all about the texture!
This is more chat than news per se, but since we’re talking sandwiches… I finally got adventurous and tried Alimentari’s mortadella ‘cheese steak’ today and that thing is delicious. If you can hang with the bologna-like texture and the $15 price tag.
Tying into the news aspect, I guess the scattershot approach from Oakwood may be the right call considering there’s at least two good sandwich-focused delis within a few blocks already.
This is a little off topic, but looking at the Oakwood Deli menu made me realize that Boar’s Head seems to have shrugged off their quality control issues. Also made me think, are there competitors in the high end deli meats market? Boar’s Head appears to be the standard at the majority of deli’s. A quick Google search doesn’t show much competition. Maybe Dietz & Watson, but they are much smaller. Interesting (to me) from a supply chain aspect.
At breakfast this morning at Oakwood Deli. Fantastic.
I share in the love for Oakwood Deli. I went this morning and got the breakfast burrito with chorizo, and my wife got a BEC on an everything bagel. Found the food to be solid, the prices to be great, and the staff to be SUPER friendly (they gave my son a free bacon sandwich, and offered to refill my coffee for free multiple times). Plus, they have parking right out front, ample indoor/outdoor seating, and fast service. All equate to a winning combination in my world. Hope this place makes it.
I think the spray-and-pray menu might be a virtue here. Looking forward to checking it out. When I worked in Wade Park years ago, the café there had a similar lunch thing going and it worked surprisingly well for them.
Also going to comment on Oakwood Deli. Definitely going to be a staple in the area. Looks well staffed, prices aren’t too bad, and everything we got was great.
I, too am surprised that the Boar’s Head situation has not driven the company out of business. I wonder what percentage of their sales is commercial instead of retail. The USDA subsequently climbed all over the four Boar’s Head plants. One of them was clean, and two were in almost as bad a condition as the Virginia plant where the Listeria outbreak was traced to. That plant remains closed.
I still get Boars Head - their stuff just tastes better. Blue Bell ice cream gets the same treatment.
But for the love of God our city needs to stop trying to make “Gloso” a neighborhood name. It’s absolute cringe. We need to do better. Drunktown is way better.
Not only that, it’s the only “chain” restaurant downtown. While it’s nothing extraordinary as Ale House, it was reliable/predictable if that’s what you wanted other than a fast food visit on the edge of downtown like McD’s or Jimmy John’s.
Maybe the sarcasm font is tough to discern, but it is there, no doubt when I use GloSo…
Which is why it’s a perfect name for what Glenwood South has become.
Oh Thank God!

JUST ANNOUNCED ON FB — Popular downtown bar and dessert bar Bittersweet is welcoming a new sister this August.
Introducing Bitter Social, a new social bar and community space complete with cocktails, seltzers, coffee, and wine paired with social events like dance parties, smutty poetry nights with Blackbird Books & Coffee, movie nights, and a whole lot of vibes, not to mention the amazing rooftop patio.
Angela of Gallo Pelón Mezcaleria (last day Cinco de Mayo) turns the space over in good hands to Kim and Lewis, while she and friends focus on the upcoming opening of Mala Pata in Gateway Plaza. But don’t fret, Centro remains open!
Bittersweet it is, but excited for the new concept!
