General Retail/Restaurant News

San Antonio did this a few years back as the downtown is very suspectible to flooding but no more. A huge flood tunnel was built. I have been to both of ends of it where it goes end and where it comes out and only during heavy rains is it blasting out at the south end.
Maybe that is an idea with abandoning the ground floor parking and keep the deck above and let water go into deep ponds dug out. (Then pop out some window and have lakefront dining on the ground floor)

That’s cool! Lived there over 20 years and wasn’t aware of this lol.

I wonder if something like this is more feasible in SA than in Raleigh due to all the porous shale and limestone it sits on. I’m no geologist though…

Saw on Instagram that a new concept is opening in the former Happy + Hale location in City Plaza - Veloce Italian Market. It seems to be offering pizza, paninis, wings, and provisions (think take home and cook yourself options). It’s from the same guy behind V’s Pizza.

Saw a big banner in the Capital Club 16 window last night that says “Coming Soon:” and then I forget the name, but it was a “Peruvian Grill” - so that space won’t sit empty much longer!

Good. Absolutely zero reason that space should be a glorified Door Dash kitchen that doesn’t serve walk-up customers.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but saw this in the window by the retro arcade coming to Glenwood. The Museum Shop is coming while the history museum is being renovated.

Passed by there today - it’s called ‘Inka Grill’. It will be a decent addition to the variety of cuisine downtown! Looks like they have locations in Virginia and Greensboro.

Really bothers me that the sign says “Iinka Grill” though.

Yeah, I’m not sure why they’re using that extra letter… but it’s also on their website. The site itself has inconsistent spellings of the name as well.

I looked at the Inka Grill in Roanoke and the city name was spelled wrong on their website!

Maybe just bad spellers all around?

Well, the NC business registration appears to be “Inka Grill” so I guess we’ll go with that!

TBJ posted an article on Veloce. Not a whole lot of extra info on the concept, but Rapillo is also the guy behind Flour and Barrel and he is also opening a “speakeasy” on Fayetteville St by the end of the year.

The article says he is working on a third concept for Fayetteville St, but doesn’t give any specifics.

Sad to see this. They were new when I was new here.

For a nice recap of his life, even though he retired a few years ago:

Will miss it for sure…

Hate that it’s closing, but that’s such a cool space that I hope something else opens up there soon. Was wondering if this was coming sooner or later - had looked pretty empty the last few times I’d walked by and they didn’t do much in the way of promotion.

When they opened 15 years ago, everyone was thrilled with how well they renovated that old space while keeping the historic charm. Hopefully a new place will take advantage of that and keep it special.

Bring back Darryl’s!

Damn… and with the useless “Blend” that seems to never be open, ever, nor do I even know what the hell it is (I’ve heard it’s a front for an MLM scheme), this whole block is about to be dead…

You forgot about Player’s Retreat.

That’s on Oberlin, I’m just referring to that stretch along Hillsborough with David’s and “Blend” - which will now just be a long dead-zone
