I always thought the old Darryl’s building would be a great spot for an Elmo’s.
That neighborhood had ambitious development plans that never materialized. Baffling to me because I feel like it’s a killer location.

If, for some magical reason, the Marine Corp recruiting office on the could be redeveloped in the same 2(3?) story brick buildings like across the street, it could be a pretty cool little corner. Is it wrong to hope, in my own fantasy land, that Sadlacks part deux rises up in this space?
That would be a really sad loss.
That or another casualty of the neverending issues with the bus station & Moore Square…
Maybe one day we will have a City Council that will finally realize the homeless/vagrant problem hurts small business & hurts the City overall…& do something about it.
Just look at the growth of Downtown West compared to East of Fayetteville Street…year over year over year.
That location is always busy and it says temporary. Just calm down and see what happens.
Surely somehow this is still Moore Square loiters’ fault! Perhaps the staff only needs time off because of how many poor people they are forced to realize exist!
(need I add an /s?)
If you know, you know!
That’s one of those “Tell me you’re from Raleigh without telling me you’re from Raleigh” sort of statements.
This exchange today basically sums up the internet forum culture these days. ![]()
You make people never want to post here. I have been going to Vic’s for years and don’t remember this midsummer closure. They removed the button from the website and everything. I’m not on social media. So I posted here assuming someone would know the answer and they did. I wasn’t trying to stir anything up, geeze.
If there’s one thing Leo is all about, it’s people not posting on here… ![]()
Also, I’m pretty sure he wasn’t even referring to your post, but the over the top reply someone made to it.
This thread just keeps getting better.
Super excited about this new addition as I love Peruvian cuisine. Got the ceviche, chaufas (Peruvian style fried rice influenced by the large east Asian population that has moved to Peru and is considered a typical dish), some Hancaino potatoes, and yucca fritters.
Ceviche was pretty good. Hopefully they can improve on the texture of the fish as it was a bit tough, but the flavor was all there. Super fresh. The chaufas were excellent, can’t really go wrong with fried rice. The potatoes and yucca were a little under seasoned for my taste but still good.
They don’t have their liquor license yet (should be getting it this week) so I didn’t get to have a pisco sour, which I was very excited for, but they did have chicha morada which is a sweet purple corn and cinnamon drink. Overall a good experience that I hope gets better as they get their legs under them.
This seemed like a soft opening, there were only three other groups in the restaurant when we were there and I haven’t seen much social media buzz about it yet. Hopefully they’ll make a bit more noise once they get their liquor license. Worth a visit.
I drove down Wilmington St over the weekend and saw a sign up for “Thirsty Buffalo Bites and Brews” in what I believe was the old Tonbo space that most recently had been a Mexican place downstairs and an Italian concept upstairs. It’s rotated into a few different concepts over the last 1-2 years.
I saw the same exact thing over the weekend, meant to post about it here. Looked like a dance floor was upstairs as well, could see the lighting from the street. May have been another business, but I was assuming it was all the same concept, since the lighting and whatnot looked consistent from what I could see.
Stanbury will be taking over the old Escazu space, doubling its footprint. They’ll be expanding the kitchen and putting in a cocktail bar with light snacks while you wait for your table. They could have moved somewhere else for a better deal, but decided the neighborhood was a big part of their success, so they stayed.
That’s awesome. I know they’re everyone’s darling, even if I personally find a lot of the menu to be kind of unappealing. I still think they’re a cool place, and I’m glad they’re able to expand and also stay true to their roots.
Do you find pork dishes specifically off-putting?
